What have you learned about motivation in a group?

Motivation plays an important role in the group development. Motivation is the driving force which help people to achieve goals. Motivation is said to be intrinsic or extrinsic that makes a person move towards a goal. From my point of view, I think motivation in a group is very important for the success of a group. I learn that motivation leads to high level of productivity in group. Also, motivation is an important tool, which helps to maintain coordination and develop a feeling of harmony among group members. Motivation minimize conflicts in groups. Moving towards, motivation leads to achievement of group goals. It is an art of encouraging others as well as ourselves which helps in meeting desires and needs of group members. For example, some students doing their studies with hard work but why they studies with hard work? Because there is a motivation behind this maybe they want get good grades which helps in their future to get good jobs. All in all, behind each of these actions there is a force which compels the individual to engage in that action which is called motivation.

Discuss what you have done to motivate yourself and your group?

I think in our group, we did lot of things to motivate our group. In this I will tell you what I did to motivate my group members, so that they do work more efficiently and effectively. Firstly, I play a role of good listener in my group. I think it is helpful to motivate group members because they think that their ideas are listened by others. Moving further, I gave different responsibilities to each group member of my team as a leader of my group. I think that when people are fully responsible, they will be more likely to find the motivation to complete their tasks. Also, when group members get responsibilities than they feel that if everything is happening than they are responsible for it. For example, when I am working in a group and my group members give me responsibility to do something than I do that work with full efforts because I think that if I do this work properly than our group get good grades. That is my motivation behind the group work. Moving towards, I think by appreciating group member’s effort and work, they feel motivated because human beings are always greedy of praise and recognize. Appreciation of their efforts gives them personal satisfaction and in result they felt motivated and put more efforts next time. For example, in school when I got good grades in my exams than my teacher appreciated my work in front of the whole class. At that time, I felt very motivated and I kept thinking that next time I did more hard work so that my teacher appreciated me again. Moreover, it is necessary that I should tell my group members that why they need to do this group work? Why they are here? I think this helps a lot to give motivation to my group members because they think about in their minds what they want from this class or group? What are their goals for this group work? All in all, I think these things help a lot to motivate my group members. Moving further, in my group, I always support my group members when they need. I always try to help my group members with the knowledge that I have related to the concepts. I think this gives a motivation to the group members when each group members support each other to solve the problems. Also, the environment where we work is very important for motivation. In our group work, we always talk with each other very politely. We don’t disrespect anybody. We don’t make fun of everybody. I think this factor is also give motivation to group members to do work more effectively when they are respected in a group. Lastly, in our group we do not do useless meetings because I think this factor demotivate group members a lot because we all are international students. We have so much responsibilities and work to do. It is not good that we called everybody and do 5-10 minutes meeting that we do on our WhatsApp group. So, we did group meetings when they were necessary. We just did our work through our WhatsApp group to avoid useless meetings.

What have you learned from your experience?

I learned that motivation plays crucial role in group development. I think it is very important to motivate ourselves and group to do a successful group work. From my experience of group work, I think that motivation in group is losses due to perceived inequity. I experienced that when there is inequity in group than group members reduce their efforts. They do not do work with full motivation because they think that there is one person in group who is liked by the leader. Also, they think that there is no need to put efforts because their efforts are not recognized by the group leader or members. For example, if I am in a group and I put lot of efforts into my group work but my group leader do not appreciate me for this. He/she just only appreciate one of my group members for all the work. Obviously, than I will feel bad and in return I did not do anything or maybe I do but do not do work as good as I do early. Moreover, I learnt that it is necessary that we do not discourage our group members when they do mistakes because we all make mistakes. It’s part of being human. If we make fun of our group members when they do mistakes than we demotivated them a lot. Also, I learnt that motivation leads to better understanding. Participants in controversy tend to have more continuing motivation to learn about the issue and to come to the best reasoned judgement possible. Lastly, I learn that clear goals of a group work is very necessary to motivate group members which tell them what they have to do actually to achieve something. All in all, I learnt that motivation is necessary at every stage of group work to become a successful group.
