The Research Paper is a formal 5-page paper that allows you to demonstrate your ability to research and discuss the life and career of a photographer selected from the Research Paper Gallery of Photographers.
In addition to discussing the photographer’s life and career, you will also identify and discuss your chosen photographer’s specific contributions to the history of photography.
Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this page to read the Assignment Instructions and the Grading Rubric so you will understand how you will be graded for the Research Paper assignment.
Research Paper Assignment Instructions
Visit the Research Paper Gallery of Photographers and select a photographer to research.
Your Research Paper will focus on your selected photographer’s biographical information, but it must also include discussion focusing on the period in which the photographer worked as a means to place the photographer within his/her appropriate historical context. You will also clearly identify and discuss the photographer’s contributions to the history of photography.
The Research Paper must be submitted to your instructor electronically via the Research Paper Drop Box.
After submitting your Research Paper electronically to your instructor via the Research Paper Drop Box, you must post your paper in the Research Paper Discussion Forum for your classmates to read and comment on.
Copy and paste the contents of your paper directly into the Discussion Forum. Do not simply attach an electronic attachment of your paper to your post.
Research Paper Format Requirements
Title your document according to the following example:
Your last name_Research (ex: Jones_Research)
The Research Paper must be double-spaced using Times New Roman font.
Font size must not exceed 12 points.
The written portion of the Research Paper must fill at least five (5) full typewritten pages. Meeting the five-page requirement is important to your overall grade. Each full typewritten page is worth 20 points.
Top, bottom, and side margins must measure no more than one inch (1″) in width.
Spelling, punctuation, grammar, and writing style are important and will count in the overall grading process.
Research Paper Writing Guide
Visit the Online Writing Lab to learn information that will help you as you write your research paper.
Please refer to this site as you begin working on your paper and do not hesitate to contact your instructor via the ART 2235 course email if you have any questions or concerns regarding the process of writing a research paper.
Sources & Citations
You must consult at least six (6) sources:
four (4) books (college-level research only; children’s publications and encyclopedias of any kind are not acceptable sources for college-level research). In addition to hardcopy books, you may also use e-books and online journals.
two (2) internet sources. Consult reputable sources such as sites ending in .edu or .org. These sites are typically associated colleges, universities or art museums.
You must properly cite all sources you directly quote or paraphrase within the body of your paper using parenthetical notation, footnotes, or endnotes.
It is important to consult a variety of sources. One author’s view may be slanted or inaccurate. Be a critical thinker. Do not rely exclusively on internet resources.
You must provide a Works Cited or Bibliography page at the end of your paper that lists at least six sources appropriate for college-level research that have been cited in the body of your paper.

An Important Note About Wikipedia
Avoid using Wikipedia as a source you list on your Bibliography of Works Cited page!
Although Wikipedia can be used to gather general information and to identify the names of primary sources worthy of further research, the site’s open editing function allows anyone (even you!) to alter the information that appears in an entry.
As a result, Wikipedia is not reliable and should never be used as a primary source or cited in any college-level paper.
