Peter Gerhardt speaks of the importance of a “5 Year Rule.” In other words, if we expect a person with ASD to use a skill, it needs to be taught 5 years before expected use.

(1) If you had to choose 5 skills critical to successful adulthood, which need to be addressed early and often, what would they be? Why these?

(2) How could teachers introduce these in early childhood, elementary school, middle school, and high school?

(3) Are there reasons these skills may not be attended to as much as they should?

Justify your answer with specific examples.

(4) What would you do as a teacher to advocate for focus on these skills with other educational professionals, school administrators, and families?

Reflect on reasons why it is critical to provide individualized and comprehensive sexuality education for people with ASD.

Chapter 13 Preference Assessment

(1) Select a child or adult on the autism spectrum you know (Male or Female)

(2) Choose 2 methods of preference assessment (e.g., interviewing family members, observations, reinforcer sampling), and

(3) write a 2-3-page reflection paper.

This reflection paper has a rubric. English must be clear, well constucted and organized.

There must be in-text citations and credible sources

use APA style.

Hi Maryann,” I would bring this up to family members by creating a safe space to discuss their concerns first. Getting to know the family’s values and concerns is crucial in knowing how to discuss sexuality education. After doing this, I would put together a list of resources tailored to their needs and wants as a family” This approach is great. I would also choose some words that are more appropriate when discussing sexuality with parents due to cultural and religion differences. Great post.

Hi Mary, I strongly agree with your believe that ” it is critical to educate those with disabilities on appropriate sexual encounters so they are knowledgeable of safe and the importance of gaining consent before sexual interactions”. Every human must have basic knowledge about sexuality in order understand the diseases, disabilities, characters, and significance of all that are involved in it. Nice Post!

Hi Nicole, “Mathematics can often become a frustration with some of my students. Although, I do not currently teacher math, I often have my students come to me for help or extra instruction when they do not understand something. Often I hear issues with the class being too loud to hear instruction (physical) or that they just do not remember all the steps (Cognitive)” I can relate to this your post. I strongly believe that student’s immediate environment influences their performance in mathematics in many aspects. A student who is constantly under emotional stress will perform poorly. Uptil now, i still find myself sruggling when it comes to mathematics. Hope to get over it one day. Thanks for sharing Nicole.

Hi Tina, “This, to me, is a significant problem with students, especially students with learning disabilities. If the parent does not believe in the student and does not push them to do better, then the student will not think that they can do better and will do the minimum to pass the class.” I am with you on this. Motivation is even more important when it comes to mathematics. It can be given by colleagues, teachers, and family members to enable the child be successful. Good Job!
