Essay. Over the course of the term, you will learn that we invented a very powerful technology— writing—about 5000 years ago. It’s allowed us to generate ideas and material culture that we otherwise could not have. What I want you to do is think about what the next great cognitive technology will be and then write 2,500 words about your idea(s). This is your chance to do some clear innovative thinking. Your essay needs to start with this simple paragraph: “Five thousand years ago, we managed to invent writing, a technology that has enabled us to generate ideas and material culture that we otherwise could not have. I’ve been thinking about what our next great cognitive technology will be. In this essay, I’ll summarize where those thoughts have taken me.” Note: Montaigne invented the essay form. The word “essay” comes from the French verb “essayer” which means to try, to attempt. You should write your essay in this spirit. You will do some thinking and then you will write about where that thinking took you. You may or may not come to specific answers and that’s alright. This is the explanation given by the professor.
