Compile a database containing experimental data of solubility of nine aqueous biphasic systems based on ethyl lactate.

Aqueous two-phase systems based on ethyl lactate is an innovative technique to separate biomolecules that combines the advantages of liquid-liquid extraction and hydrophilic biorenewable solvent. Due to the complexity of these systems, rigorous models based on theory are not available.

Therefore, the empirical equation given by Merchuk is usually used to describe binodal curves. However, Merchuk’s equations provide a poor extrapolation ability.

Therefore, the aim of this work is the analysis of other equations, comparing the models reported in the literature and proposing alternative equations to improve accuracy or to reduce the mathematical complexity. The research objectives of this project are:

i) To compile a database containing experimental data of solubility of nine aqueous biphasic systems based on ethyl lactate;

ii) To select statistical criteria to be used for the selection of models;

iii) To fit various empirical models to experimental data;

iv) To analyse and compare the effectiveness of empirical models, allowing discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each equation.
