comprehension and synthesis of recent course

Module 3 Home Group Questions – Home Group 4

From PSYC&200 – 9424

No unread replies. 1 1 reply.

Purpose:

  • Demonstrate comprehension and synthesis of recent course topics, themes and materials through responses to critical thinking questions posed by instructor.
  • Integrate additional researched information into responses; deepening understanding of course themes/topics.
  • Through discussion, explore and engage with differing ways of interpreting and making sense of the week’s topics and materials, identify unanswered questions, seek to clarify or reinforce our understanding, etc.

To Do:

Part 1: Ponder, Research & Compose

Choose a question or two from the options below.  Indicate the question/s you are responding to by providing a heading/subheading.   Responses should:

  • Demonstrate reading, comprehension, and ability to apply course materials and course learning. Make explicit reference to the course materials in your responses.
  • Integrate perspective and insights from at least one additional non-course resource of your own selection. You can use any and all library resources and article databases, or other credible popular press resources.  Please make sure to cite outside resources.
  • Your response should be about 500 (min) words total and be proofread and edited for clarity

Question Options (choose 1-3 questions to respond to):

  • Describe the cohort (group of individuals who share the same historical experiences at the same times in their lives) that you belong to.  What are some defining features of this historical cohort? How does being a part of this cohort shape your developmental experience biologically? Psychologically? Socially?
  • Provide and discuss examples of context-specific development.  Include examples from our course materials as well as personal examples or any other relevant examples.
  • Which theory or theories did you connect with or made the most sense to you? What is the emphasis of the theory? Why does it make sense to you? What other theories does it need to be combined with for a ‘holistic’ perspective on the human experience?
  • Temperament is a hereditary characteristic that is modifiable by experience, but continues to exert itself throughout the life (see text, article, and websites). Compare temperamental styles of your siblings (or siblings in another family you know well). Think of all of the ways in which you/they are similar and different. How would you classify each person’s temperamental style? What aspects of each individual’s temperament do see as being a product of nature (the person was that way since birth) or nurture (parenting/experience) or both? What impact did the characteristics/temperament of each have on how the person was treated or reacted to by parents, teacher, peers? How did it impact future life choices such as career, etc.? Give an example of “goodness of fit” between you or a sibling’s temperament and some life setting.
  • Explore how the process of birth could be considered a medical event, a natural event and/or combination of both. One a similar note, have medical procedures helped and harmed the birth process/experience? If so, how?
  • How might culture influence the expression of emotion in young children? Use your own culture as an example, or others you are familiar with.  Bring in another example with your outside research.
  • What types of school curriculum might encourage cooperation and the development of altruistic behaviors?
  • Erikson stresses the fundamental importance of the development of trust in infancy. Discuss the issue of Trust vs. Mistrust in relation to an infant’s early social interactions. If mistrust predominates, how might it affect a person’s social interactions later in life?
  • Thoughts on the attachment videos? Given what you have learned about attachment, what would be requirements (according to you) for childcare that would enhance the likelihood of developing a secure attachment?
  • Thoughts and reactions to the video clips “Linguistic Genius of Babies” and/or ” “What do Babies Think”?  How did these videos connect to/reinforce/expand the other materials you read?
  • Develop a list of stereotypical behaviors and personality characteristics typically associated with males and females (e.g. aggression, nurturing, activity level, etc.). Think about your favorite TV shows, movies, or next time you are watching, take not of the characters, their behaviors, and how they align or differ from the list you made.  How was gender portrayed and characterized? What contexts are males and females shown in? Are the characters based on gender stereotypes? Do we see evidence of any non-binary/non-gender conforming characters? If so, how are they portrayed? What “message” do you think a child seeing these characters might take away, and how might it impact a child’s notion of what is gender “appropriate”?

Part 2: Discuss & Dialog

  • After everyone has posted their Home Group responses by Friday midnight, we will begin discussion and dialog over peer work and ideas. I will be looking for at least two discussion contributions. This can be feedback and insights posted to peer work, or a response to feedback provided to your work.  Please read the following information about what effective online discussion looks like.  Lots of examples of how to engage!: How to Participate in Online Discussion.

Due Dates & Subsmission:

  • Your question responses should be posted to this discussion forum by Friday, midnight (click ‘reply’) below.
  • Discussion, feedback and replies to peers should be completed by the following Monday, noon.  I will be looking for at minimum two contributions to the group’s weekly discussions.

Criteria for Evaluation:

*Demonstrated comprehension of and ability to apply course materials and course learning to posed questions.

*Explicitly and appropriately integrated course materials into response.

*Effective selection of additional researched material, effective synthesis with course materials in responses to question.

*Cited outside resource

*Demonstrated effort in composing insightful, thoughtful responses.

*Proofread and edited for mistakes and clarity

*Met 500 word minimum

*Participated in small group discussion (min. of two replies/contributions); effective insightful responses/discussion with peers

The topics from the Ted talks had really boasted my interest. The topics expanded my learning of infant children. First off, what I found interesting was the language barrier, and how infants process the language they are being spoken to at 6-8 months, and 10-12 months. When infants were learning the R-L group of speech Japanese, and American babies had started off the same knowledge. As months processed and the babies were then again put in this demonstration the rates were different. American infants knowledge had increased over the months span, but the Japanese babies knowledge had gone down. The reason for this is the language barrier. The Japanese language does not have a lot of R-L words like the English language, so when the two babies are both being spoken two different languages, they receive and understand the most common language to them. The same demonstration was given to another set of groups, but with learning a second language. An American infant and a Taiwan infant were both in a test to see how well they would be able to catch the language, and understand it. They were learning mandarin. The tests showed that Taiwan infants scored high while American infants scored low. They had mention something about how languages that have more common words or similar speech, might be easier for an individual who native language is similar. These tests didn’t stop there. Scientists also wanted to know if television had a play in learning another language. They did the same tests on infants, they found that television still had no affect of learning another language. They said that children learn better face to face, rather than a television.  Explore how the process of birth could be considered a medical event, natural event and/or a bit of both. On a similar note, have medical procedures helped and harmed the birth process/ experience? If so, how? The process of giving birth has many different forms. The most common birthing way in the United States is giving birth at a hospital. Which is considered a medical event. When giving birth you have the options of having an epidural, having a natural labor, and in some cases women have to have caesarean, also known as a c-section. With any of these options they are classified as a medical event, because you are at the hospital while giving birth. Natural event of birthing is again giving birth with no medications. A more natural way of giving birth is at home, where you are accompanied by a midwife, and her helping hand. If by any means they think your life or the babies life is at risk the midwife will accompany you to the hospital. I think medical procedures have both helped and harmed the birthing experience. While giving birth the baby can get stuck on your pelvic bone, which can cause complications. But doctors tend to use a vacuum, which is just as it sounds. They stick the top of the babies head in the suction part and pull the baby out. I have not had that used on my child, but i have heard stories of women who had to use it and it left burns on their babies head. That can ruin a women’s whole birthing experience. They now have to deal with not only a newborn, but also a newborn in pain with burns on their head. I also can see how it has helped the birthing process. Some women might not have the luxury of being able to deliver vaginally so, they have to have a c-section. The most common cause is because the baby is feet down (breached). Doctors also opt to give women c-sections when their water has been broken for too long. After 12 hours if the baby hasn’t progressed, or they aren’t dilated far enough they will give a women a c-section. This is because of infection caused inside the body after the amniotic fluid has been gone. There are a lot of small factors that can make a women’s birthing experience and also ruin their birthing experience.
