“My Beloved World” by Sonia Sotomayor.
GUIDELINES: Your paper must be typed, double-spaced, and 4 to 5 pages in length. Margins should not
exceed 1” on all sides; font size should not exceed 12 points. The essay should be in your words – if you
choose to use quotations, make sure that they are short. For this paper it is not necessary to footnote
quotations; simply include at the end of a quote the page number where the quote may be found. (This, of
course, assumes that you are quoting from the book you have chosen. If you are quoting from any other
source, please include a full citation.) Your work will be based on the following considerations: content,
accuracy of content, grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity and organization, specific evidence provided to
support your interpretation/assessment of your source, and ability to focus on and answer the questions under
consideration.
QUESTIONS: What were the formative experiences of the subject’s life? In what ways did her actions conform
to the gender expectations of her day; in what ways did they not? How did her times and her gender shape her
life? What does the subject’s experiences suggest about the United States during the subject’s lifetime? Finally,
what did you find most interesting about her, and why?
