Criteria 2 The extent to which literature (current or germinal literature beyond unit readings) is incorporated to support an argument in a well referenced and synthesised assessment 6 marks In your assessment, you have: The Introduction The introduction of a paper is VERY important, it sets the scene, tells the reader what the paper is about, and what you are going to say and why. This is where you can state your position. You may also like to define the theory or theories that your interviewees fall under that you will be discussing (but do not start your discussion in this space). Many students write the introduction first, but as suggested in the presentation, I would write this last. It is very common that students say in the introduction they will do x, y and z, and then somewhere in the middle of the assessment change their mind and write about v, x and y, BUT forget to update the introduction. This is a classic error of academic writing, so please check that your introduction reflects exactly what you have written. Please also remember this is the first thing the markers read, so you want it to be impressive! The Discussion The discussion is a balanced point of view about what you are presenting and will then build and substantiate this position supported by examples (themes) from the interviews and drawn from scholarly literature from peer-reviewed academic sources. In this assessment, you are tasked with arguing and critiquing your chosen theoretical position that supports the particular leadership approach/s and how leadership characteristic/s have influenced practice change. So, fundamentally you choose a position and then you provide the arguments and evidence to the reader to support your assertions that answer the question posed.

Incorporating the interview data into your sentences During the interview with nurse A, it was evident that they leaned towards a style leadership theory. Nurse A felt that leadership required the nurse to be open and adaptive especially relating to her current job title of a clinical nurse educator. This was demonstrated through her responses to the questions posed throughout the interview. Nurse A proposed the importance of involving nurses in the decision-making process of procedural change, which is a strong trait of a democratic leader (Bortoluzzi, Caporale & Palese 2014). Democratic leadership could be looked at as shared learning, that is distributed between a collective group through the means of open communication, that looks at developing plans for a shared purpose (Smolović Jones et al. 2016). Incorporating your data using direct quotes Nurse A enlightened the importance of involving the mentors of novice staff members in the decision-making process in relation to education needs, with her statement: ‘I would work with their mentor, and we would work out a plan on how to deliver education to meet their needs’. Nurse A further alliterated this by: ‘I do not have to be there, everyone is on the same page, we have all worked together to create the best plan to grow each of our novice staff members’. The Conclusion The conclusion summarises your paper, confirming your position, drawing together the themes, ideas to explain how they connect and relate in answering the question that was posed. Main headings (introduction, discussion, conclusion) are vital, and I would also highly recommend using subheadings from your themes in your discussion, but this is your choice. The tone of writing When I write in this teaching announcement, I write in a casual, conversational, narrative (storytelling) tone, and use colloquialisms. There is ‘method in my madness’ (a colloquialism) as learnings from on-line teaching suggest that this style is more engaging for students than a formal academic tone. You cannot write to this style in your assessments. Your writing must be clear and concise, with no colloquialisms and in an academic tone. You will be required to write in academic voice (no use of ‘I’). The main reason for using academic writing is because ‘flowery’ writing may read beaut
