ASSIGNMENT 2
301002 Specialised Software Applications
The Objectives of this assignment are:
- Apply finite element model for structural analysis using ABAQUS
- Perform/ build ABAQUS model
- The report should include introduction, the methodology, result and discussion and
conclusion
Question:
Concrete-filled hollow steel column (CFHS) column as shown in Figure 1 is a composite
column filled with either plain or reinforced concrete which has many advantages, such as:
minimising the corrosion of the concrete reinforcing steel bars; better response to fire
conditions, and reduction of the column cross-section, among others.

Figure 1: CFHS column (All
dimensions in mm).
For model, a 6000 mm long Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) with size of 500 mm x 500
mm and 12.5mm Thickness, Grade 500MPa with Modulus of Elasticity of 200000 MPA,
filled with reinforced concrete were used. The concrete used was 32 MPa concrete and four
N12 reinforcing bars were spaced at 400mm centre to centre embedded inside of concrete.
The assignment is to model axial load versus mid height deflection of one end fixed
(CFHS) column. Please compare the results with those obtained for a 6000 mm long
conventional reinforced concrete column (475mm x 475mm).
The report should include the finite element modelling process, results including axial load
versus mid height deflection and explained in detail the stress distribution according to the
axial load.
