a. essay. This question asks you to reflect upon an important theme of the course, in the light of specific readings. Your answer should include several (at least 7-8) paragraphs. It must have a clear thesis statement. Be sure to include a bibliography / works cited list, and use proper citation format to show your sources. Go beyond obvious points, and add something original to our discussion of core themes in Central Asian history.
Shifting of power in early Asia and how that has effected Asia^^
b. primary-source analysis. Choose ONE of the THREE films available on Canvas (all three can be found through the streaming links in “Pages”). In an essay of at least 5 paragraphs, evaluate this film as a primary source to learn about the region. Situate it in context, and explain what it teaches us about Central Asia. Don’t forget to ask all the questions we’ve been asking all term about primary sources – do consult the “Guidelines for Primary Source Analysis.” (Who made it? Why? What do we learn? What are its limits?) Film: angle on the right^^
c. IDs. Look carefully at the lecture keyword list posted on Canvas. What, in your opinion, are the FIVE most important key terms on this list for understanding modern Central Asia? Select terms that do not overlap: your choices should represent chronological and geographic, as well as thematic, diversity. At least one must come from each of the three “zones” we have discussed. Write 1-2 paragraphs about EACH of the five terms you select, explaining what the term is (where/when/who etc.) AND THEN – this is the crucial part – how it played a role in the narratives and interpretations of Central Asian history explored in this course. In other words: you will not receive credit for an answer that clips text from Wikipedia or other online resources to identify a particular item. The points come entirely from your ability to situate each term in a framework of global/regional/Central Asian history. What is the term, in other words, and why does it matter? Black Death
