Overview of CHAPTER 6 A teacher’s personal philosophy can and does impact his or her approach to teaching and learning. Typically, five philosophies of education emerge when we examine the personal views and approaches of a large number of teachers. These are:
perennialism,
essentialism, – this is more my style of philosophy
social reconstructionism,
progressivism, and
existentialism.
Each has its own unique view of education, curriculum, teaching, and learning.
In this chapter, you will explore each of these philosophies and your own. From this exploration, you will be able to see why you have found some approaches to instruction more appealing than others. Those you have liked best have probably been consistent with your own philosophy of education.
