Definition Paper: What is Happiness?
In this, your first paper, you will argue (in other words, persuade your reader) for what you think the definition of happiness is.
Note that while you can use personal examples, this paper is not asking what will make YOU happy, in particular, but what you think would make most people happy.
You’ll be using one of the three strategies you learned in the definition essay video I made for you in last week’s lesson (in section 2.1):
1. Enumeration: listing the qualities that will make someone happy (but remember, this is in essay format, NOT a bulleted list)
2. Analogy: using an extended metaphor to explain how two unlike things are similar
3. Negation: showing how two things are NOT alike
Since this is an argument paper, all the rules of argument apply:
1. Your thesis statement must argue something significant and explain why your paper is important (for example, if you were to choose negation, you could say happiness is not what people generally think it is).
2. You must have at least three major points.
3. You must include counterarguments throughout your paper. So for every point you have, you need to present a counterargument and explain why that counterargument is wrong.
Here are the paper’s details:
• It must be in MLA format (see How to Format an Essay in 3.1)
• It needs to be at least four full pages in length, with an
additional page for the Works Cited
• It must include at least three sources from the HCC databases
• Citations must be in correct MLA style, both in-text and on
the Works Cited page
I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Your rough draft is DUE Saturday at 11:59 PM.
