Watson’s Theory Concept
The concept of interest is “inspire” (concerning faith and hope). As one of the ten caritas processes presented in Watson’s Human Caring Theory, inspire requires that nurses be authentically present in the relationship with patients, with a focus on enabling a belief/hope/faith system that honors the patient’s subjective inner, life-world (Alligood, 2022). In this case, inspire is defined as the active action of motivating/spurring others on towards a particular goal. It involves an inspirer who causes a particularly strong reaction, and an inspired who is mentally stimulated to feel or do something. As a concept, inspire has three main qualities. First, it is spontaneously evoked, although intention can be involved. Second, it involves a moment of awareness and clarity of new, better possibilities that take the form of a vivid, grand vision that was previously unclear by may have always been there. Third, it approaches motivation as it strives to actualize, express and transmit a new idea or vision. Inspire as presented by Watson focuses on instilling faith, hope and honor in others. It has some similarities with the concept of adaptation as presented in Calista Roy’s Adaption Theory. Adaptation, as presented in the theory, involves being accommodating to a particular environment. Comparing the two theories, there is an acceptance of faith within the health care context. However, there is a significant difference as inspire focuses on faith while adaptation goes beyond faith to involve any kind of change that allows an individual to be accommodating of a situation or environment (Alligood, 2022).
