Paper Outline
i. Introduction (1/2 page)
Introduce the general ideology (i.e., Far-Left, Far-Right, Jihadist-Inspired) they associate with, and the problem they produce(d) in the United States. Students also need to include a thesis statement (i.e., This work will examine…) that briefly addresses the motivations, strategies, high profile event, media responses, and criminal justice and government responses discussed in the preceding narrative. In essence, introduce what you will be discussing in the preceding five sub-sections.
ii. Motivations (1 page)
You should provide an in-depth summary of the individuals involved and the terrorist organization as a whole, such as:
a. Their specific motivations for violence/threat of violence.
b. The motivations for individual members joining the organization.
iii. Strategies (1 page)
You should provide an in-depth summary of the terrorist strategies such as:
a. Their inner-workings and organizational tactics.
b. Their strategies for attacking / spreading their cause.
c. Their success in carrying-out attacks (i.e., how serious is / was the threat?)
iv. High Profile Event (1 page)
A case study of how a specific offender (i.e., lone-wolf) or collective engaged in a high-profile event and/or attack, and the impact this had on public understanding and fear of the promoted ideology. Keep in mind, this is an American-centric class and research paper focus, so make sure the event occurred in / impacted the U.S., even if it is an international terrorist organization.
v. Media Responses (1 page)
You should provide an in-depth summary of the media’s response to the event including:
a. How did the media portray the terrorist organization and high-profile event?
b. How did the media’s representations influence public perceptions and policy decisions?
c. What were some of the potential unintended consequences of media coverage?
vi. Criminal Justice and Government Responses (1 page)
You should provide an in-depth summary of the media’s response to the event including:
a. How did criminal justice agencies respond to the terrorist organization and high- profile event?
b. How did policy-makers respond and what policies were enacted as a result of the organization and event.
c. What were the successful outcomes of the policies?
d. What were the unintended consequences of the policies?
e. What policies were not used but evidence suggests they could be more successful for prevention of future attacks?
vii. Conclusion (1/2 page)
Summarize your research paper. Highlight the key components identified in each of the five subsections. Provide any concluding remarks about the future of the terrorist organization.
viii. References
You will need to use APA citation (for assistance, see Schoology folder). In addition, you will need to include at least five academic articles.
General Guidelines / Formatting
– The assignment should be at least 6 pages, excluding the title page and references (do not forget to include these). You must use APA formatting for the title page and references.
– The paper needs to be double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font, have 1” margins, and be written in formal Standard English.
– Please check for spelling and grammar mistakes before handing in your papers. Utilize the Writing Center if you have any issues. It is always beneficial to have someone else proofread your work.
– Drafts of the paper will not be accepted; however, discussion with the professor is strongly recommended.
– Late papers will result in one letter grade reduction for each day late.
