Assignment Task
TOPIC 2: WORKPLACE BULLYING IN HOSPITALS BACKGROUND Safe Work Australia statistics indicate that approximately 39% of mental stress disorder claims are attributable to bullying, harassment, or violence at work and 37% of workers report being yelled or sworn at while at work. Although exposure to bullying occurs across all sectors, certain occupations and industry groups report higher rates of work-related bullying. For instance, employees working within hospitals frequently report higher bullying rates than employees in other occupational settings. A 2020 medical training survey indicated that 34% of doctors-in-training and 47% of interns experienced and/or witnessed bullying, harassment, or discrimination. Working Well, (an HR Division within a large metropolitan hospital) became aware of these statistics are keen to conduct an initial organization-wide survey to better understand how their employees have experienced and/or witnessed bullying at work. Their ultimate aim is to understand the antecedents (causes) of bullying within their workforce and develop an intervention program to reduce work-related bullying. The Working Well Group are very aware that time and economic resources are quite limited within the hospital service and, combined with increasing pressures and competing priorities, it will be difficult to gain the attention of the executives who could approve the allocation of resources to their program. Therefore, the Group must propose an evidence-based strategy to target bullying that persuades the executives to invest in their program.
