Notes on the Essay
In this essay, first you need to select a country from the given list. For the first part of the essay, you need to identify and discuss the main factors that inhibit the selected country’s external integration with the rest of the world. These factors could range from, but not limited to, various distances and differences between the selected country and the rest of the countries, protectionism measures, geographical characteristics, infrastructure, institutional characteristics, cross-national diversity such as language and culture etc. You need to identify the most important barrier(s) that inhibit its external integration with the rest of the world, while clearly justifying your choice of factor(s).
For the second part of the essay, you need to focus on the institutional environment of the selected country and discuss the challenges it poses to MNEs investing/operating in that country. To do this, you can apply the concepts related to institutional environment covered in the module and read articles that discusses the institutional environment of the selected country and on the implications of institutional environment of the host country on multinational enterprises entry/operations.
You need to provide equal attention to both parts.
Guidance on tackling your essay
I suggest that you address the question in the following way:
Stage 1 – broad reading and applying the concepts learned in the module
You can apply the concepts related to the question that were covered in the module. You also need to find and read academic articles relevant to the essay question.
Stage 2 – selecting material which is relevant and applying to your context
Having undertaken wide reading and applying the concepts learned in the module, you need to bring your ideas together. Try to make a list of the arguments you have identified and ensure that you understand them and apply them to your selected context (this might mean doing some further work).
Stage 3 – organising the material you have identified into an argument
This is creative part which demonstrates that you are able to undertake ‘critical’ and ‘evaluative’ work. Your task is to convey that you have understood the available literature, the concepts learned in the module, bring in your own arguments and put them together in
a meaningful and original manner (not copying other people). You need to think about the logical way of grouping different ideas and how you can best convey that.
Stage 4 – drafting your essay
Essays take a long time to construct, and everybody goes about it in a different way. It is likely that you will have to draft it and edit it a number of times. The first attempt may look very rough.
Stage 5 – polishing your essay
Edit, edit, edit. Make sure your references are presented in the right format. Does your essay have a proper flow that logically leads to the conclusion?
Coursework Submission Requirements
The assignment should not exceed 2000 words in length, excluding references. It should be word-processed, double spaced, and written in an appropriate academic style.
The assignment should have a clear introduction and a conclusion. You should ensure that you have fully acknowledged the work of others in the body of the text by using in-text citations where appropriate.
Ensure that you provide complete references for paper, books, and other sources (e.g. Internet sites) that you have cited in the body of your answers. Harvard referencing system is preferable. Coursework will be processed with plagiarism detection software. Please, note that it is an academic offence for a student to engage in unfair academic practices or in any other submitted part of his or her University work, whether or not such work is formally assessed. A student may be found guilty of an academic offence whether or not there has been intention to deceive; that is, a judgement that negligence has occurred is sufficient to determine guilt. You may refer to EBS Student Resources and to the Academic Offences Procedure section of the module handbook.
All coursework will be anonymous (unless otherwise specified in the ‘Assessment’ section of the module outline), so you should ensure that only your registration number is included in the header. Provision is made for modules where it is not practical to have anonymous marking, e.g., for presentations.
Assignments should be submitted electronically to FASER on the given deadline date. Please refer to FASER for submission dates and time.
