Navigating Development Challenges: An Analysis of Political and Economic Institutions

Choose a country: The case study must be based on a country that is classified as a LMIC as defined by the World Bank which can be found via this link. You need to scroll down the page to find the following criteria that define a LMIC:

• Low-Income Countries with Gross National Income (GNI) per capita ($1,135 or less)
• Lower Middle-Income Countries with GNI Per Capita ($1,136 to $4,465),
• Upper Middle-Income Countries with GNI Per Capita $4,466 to $13,846.

Choose a policy area (Optional): You have the choice of selecting a single policy area or multiple policies (such as: poverty, privatisation, labour market, fiscal policy, monetary policies, health policies…etc- this list is not exhaustive).

The case study must address only one of the following topics:

• How the political and economic institutions act as an enabler or constraint for policy making processes in LMICs

• Discuss the role of the state in one of the LMICs, with reference to either Migdal’s “state in society” approach or Peter Evan’s concept of “embedded autonomy”

• Critically discuss the Rentier State’s Theory and the extent to which this theory can illustrate state-society relationship in some of the LMICs

• Discuss how crony capitalism can hinder development?

• Discuss the role of civil society in decision making in one of the LMICs
