Hi there,
This is a sociology class on Crime and Society, specifically SOCI 2450A. you will need to answer the discussion post below. The discussion post should be 2 full paragraphs in length (3-5 sentences per paragraph),
reflect an adequate understanding and engagement with the reading material, and be respectful in
both tone and content. I have attached the reading and lecture in order to answer this discussion thoroughly without using any outside sources. you can only use the readings and lecture i have attached.
In the readings for Class #3, Ramprashad et al. (2022) provide the definition of harm reduction as follows: “policies, programs, and practices that aim to minimize the negative health, social, and legal impacts associated with drug use, drug policies, and drug laws” (p. 529). They further write: “In North America, harm reduction has historically been viewed with significant controversy, with opponents stating that these strategies enable drug use despite overwhelmingly evidence to the contrary” (p. 529). Yet Johnston et al. (2024) provide a case study of a Prison Needle Exchange Program in Canada that, from the perspectives of correctional officers, complicates the established efficacy of a harm reduction program (largely through concerns for safety and rehabilitation). Engaging these readings, do you think harm reduction can be effective at managing substance use in prisons? Why or why not? Second, how might harm reduction programs in prisons require different policy approaches when compared to programs in community settings? Be sure to carefully explain your reasoning.
