Albert Beveridge gave this speech right after the Spanish American War. He mentions several of the factors we covered in class about why we changed our direction and attitudes about Imperialism in the 1890s. Look for those reasons in this speech. Here are the reasons from our notes:
-Our frontier was closing
-Ideas of Alfred Mahan
-Need for ports in international trade
-Everyone else is doing it
-Ethnocentrism – The White Man’s Burden
answer these questions.
1. Pick out two reasons for 1890s Imperialism (from the above list) and find those two reasons in Beveridge’s speech. In your own words, how did he use those reasons to argue that the US needed new territory? What examples did he use to support those ideas?
2.How did Beveridge justify “governing people without their consent”? Why would it be okay?
