Dante’s Inferno / Machiavelli’s The Prince / Cervante’s Don Quixote
• Choose one of the following prompts and write an essay (1,000
words, double spaced, 12 font) to fulfill the prompt.
• Due by Monday, December 5th.
• Submit it in the dropbox in the lesson for week 15.
Prompt Options:
1) Compare and Contrast Macchiaveli’s view of power and leadership with the
teachings of Christ. Include quotes from both The Prince and the Gospels
(Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). Include an analysis of the current cultural
significance and applicability of these opposing viewpoints. (Which viewpoints
are cultural and counter-cultural in our day?)
2) Analyze the punishments detailed in Dante’s Inferno. Do you think that they are
fitting and appropriate punishments? Defend your position. Are any of the sins
“out of place” in their respective circles?
3) In all 3 of these works, the antagonists are more abstract than we have found in
many of our previous texts. Analyze the concept of “antagonist” in all three works:
Inferno, The Prince, and Don Quixote.
4) Discuss the theme of friendship in Don Quixote’s life. Who were considered his
friends and what part did they play in his life? How did they grow and change
with him throughout the 2 parts of the story? How did they help? How did they
hinder?
