In 1990, autism was added to IDEA as a distinct category of disability. In 2013, the APA issued a significant revision of the definition of autism combining several disorders (and removing Asperger’s syndrome as a distinct disorder). The prevalence of ASD is a subject of ongoing debate and highlights the variance in risk ratio for students from various racial, ethnic or socioeconomic backgrounds.
