Write an essay in which you draw on situations from either One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (please do not use the interaction I showed and discussed in lecture) or Quiet Rage: The Stanford Prison Experiment ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUZpB57PfHs (Links to an external site.) ) to illustrate the course material on deviant identities (e.g. labeling theory, the development of a deviant identity, the various types of accounts, and other approaches to the management of a deviant identity such as props, disidentifiers, etc.). Compare and/or contrast situations discussed in the relevant articles (Convicted Rapists Vocabulary of Motive, The Influence of Situational Ethics on Cheating, The Identity Change Process: A Field Study of Obesity, Negotiating the Public Realm) with the situations from the film that you are discussing. The purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the course material by correctly applying it to situations in the films. General Comments about Papers Your paper should be 1200-1500 words long. When drawing on course material please use in text citations. For lectures, just the name of the lecture is fine. For the textbook, just the author’s name and the page # is fine. You can, but do not need to draw on materials from outside of the course. If you do, please cite them both in the text and on a separate references page using APA, ASA or MLA format. If you are unclear what this looks like you can find numerous examples and articles on the internet or check out the CU Writing Center. The reference page is not part of the assignment word count. All assignments must be turned in as a MS word or pdf document through Canvas by 5pm MST on November 23. Papers will be graded based on the following criteria: Part One (30%): How well have you demonstrated your understanding of the course material on labeling theory, the development of a deviant identity, accounts, and the management of a deviant identity? Part Two (30%): How well have you illustrated these concepts with real examples or examples from the films? Part Three (20%): How well have you compared and contrasted your discussion with the situations discussed in some or all of the articles? Part Four (20%): Writing and Style—this includes quality of writing, grammar, overall presentation (was the paper proofread, etc.), references (when appropriate) and were the directions followed.
