| Instructions for this assessment | This is a clustered skills-based assessment and will be assessing you on your ability to demonstrate the skills required in all of the units listed in this assessment. This assessment consists of two parts: Part 1: Design and develop the assessment tool Task 1: Select a unit of competence Task 2: Plan and organise the assessment Task 3: Draft the assessment tool Part 2: Review, evaluate and make modifications Task 4: Quality assurance trial Task 5: Review trial feedback Task 6: Make modifications You will be required to submit a portfolio of work and be observed participating in quality assurance. Ensure you have downloaded the files/folders identified under “What the assessor will provide”. |
| Submission instructions | On completion of this assessment, you are required to upload it or hand it to your trainer for marking. Ensure your name is at the bottom of each page of this assessment. | What do I need to do to achieve a satisfactory result? | To achieve a satisfactory result for this assessment: All questions must be answered correctly and in your own words. | Due date/time allowed | The assessment must be submitted by the due date noted on the Unit Assessment Guide. If you study online, you can find assessment due dates/time allowed/venue information on your online platform on the Assessments page or in your Training plan. You should allow a minimum of six hours to complete this assessment. You may need additional time for preparation, research and revision to ensure you have responded to each question satisfactorily. |
| Supervision | Tasks 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are unsupervised. Task 2 has an observable component. The observable component may be observed in class, facilitated in an online environment or a suitable video recorded and uploaded. Your assessor may ask for additional evidence to verify the authenticity of your submission and confirm that the assessment task was completed by you. This may include oral questioning, comparison with in-class work samples, or observation. |
| Assessment feedback, review or appeals | In accordance with the TAFE NSW policy Manage Assessment Appeals, all students have the right to appeal an assessment decision in relation to how the assessment was conducted and the outcome of the assessment. Appeals must be lodged within 14 working days of the formal notification of the result of the assessment. If you would like to request a review of your results or if you have any concerns about your results, contact your Teacher or Head Teacher. If they are unavailable, contact the Student Administration Officer. Contact your Head Teacher for the assessment appeals procedures at your college/campus. |
Specific task instructions
To complete this assessment, you will be required to:
- Plan, design and develop an assessment tool for a unit of competence in your area of expertise.
- Provide and use feedback from the trial
- Self-reflect on feedback to improve the assessment tool and make modifications.
Before commencing the assessment ensure you have a copy of the assessment supporting documents located in the following folder:
- Cl_Assess_AE_SR1 – templates used throughout all assessment events.
Part 1: Design and develop the assessment tool
Task 1: Select a unit of competence
Select a qualification and find a unit of competence different from the unit you selected in assessment event two.
NOTE: Different from: BSBWHS201 Contribute to health and safety of self and others (Release 1)
Ensure that the unit of competency:
- is current
- in your area of expertise
- from www.training.gov.au
Note: the unit must have a skills component that you can assess and you cannot select BSBCMM401 or BSBCMM201.

Task 2: Plan and organise the assessment
Using the Template_AssessmentPlan in the Cl_Assess_AE_SR1 folder, write an assessment plan in consultation with two other TAE40116 students. One student will act as a manager of the business requiring training and one as the student who will be trained or with people approved by your assessor.
You will be assessed on your ability to gather and collect information that is relevant to designing and developing an assessment tool and how you intend to apply the knowledge to specific industry/workplace requirements and learner needs.
Remember to indicate in your plan any reasonable adjustment and/or contextualisation required.
Your assessor will need to observe you and the other TAE40116 student completing this task, discuss with your assessor whether the observation will be live or whether you need to submit a recording and make the necessary arrangements.
The assessment plan can be conducted in a suitable venue (for example a classroom) or an online environment such as MS Teams, Adobe Connect or another medium.
Where your assessment plan is not being assessed real-time by your teacher or assessor, you must record the discussion using a mobile device or other equipment. Use the Video Assessment Instructions (https://share.tafensw.edu.au/share/file/744af7d4-a241-45e2-adb0-0e13f2fe4950/1/VideoAssessmentInstructions.pdf) to assist you with this process.
Note: For the demonstration of practical skills, the student must confirm their identity by holding up photo identification, such as a driver’s licence, to the camera at the beginning of each practical demonstration to confirm that the student performing the task is the student enrolled.
Refer to the Assessor Observation Checklists in the assessment feedback section to review the assessment criteria for this task, including the ability to effectively communicate with the other participants.
Your assessor will act as your stakeholder and sign off on the final approval.

Task 3: Draft the assessment tool
A suite of assessment instrument templates have been provided in the Cl_Assess_AE_SR1 folder, these instruments will assist you to design and develop the draft assessment tool for your organisation.
You will be assessed on your ability to:
- contextualise the assessment instruments to meet the needs of industry and workplace requirements identified in the assessment plan
- meet the individual or learner group needs identified in the assessment plan
- address the Principles of assessment
- meet the Rules of evidence
- cover the Dimensions of competence.
- Create your assessment instruments by:
- select appropriate assessment instruments and assessment methods for the context of the assessment identified in the assessment plan
- include one Template_AssessmentCoverPage that covers the collection of instruments. Include reasonable adjustment where required
- ensure you provide clear instructions to the student and assessor on the use of the assessment instrument
- select the correct assessment methods
- develop well-structured questions and practical tasks that guide the student through the assessment requirements
- outline the unit of competency and assessor name on the Student unit outcome summary.
- Map your assessment instruments using Template_AssessmentMapping, in the Cl_Assess_AE_SR1 folder.
- ensure you cover the unit requirements.
- Create your marking guides by:
- saving a copy of your assessment instruments (use a filename that indicates they are a marking guide)
- clearly indicate they are marking guides on the front cover
- insert relevant assessor instructions and model answers
- ensure you provide specific instructions to the assessor on the administration and use of the assessment instruments
- change the colour of the font of your model answers to red.
Submission requirements
Draft assessment instruments created by you:
- Assessment cover page.
- Student unit outcome summary
- All assessment instruments (minimum of two).
- All marking guides (minimum of two).
- Assessment mapping document.
Note: Your assessor may request that you do not submit the draft assessment tool until assessment tasks 5 and 6 have been completed.
Part 2: Review, evaluate and make modifications to the tool
Task 4: Quality assurance trial
Once you have completed your draft assessment tool it can now be trialled by another TAE40116 student completing the quality assurance and providing feedback.
Using the Template_QualityAssurance in the Cl_Assess_AE_SR1 folder you will be required to complete a trial of an assessment tool by swapping your draft assessment tool with another TAE40116 student so you both have feedback to review and use in tasks 5 and 6. You cannot conduct the quality assurance on your own assessment tool for this event. Ensure you collect a copy of the completed Quality Assurance document on your tool.
You will be assessed on your ability to complete the Template_QualityAssurance, providing detailed feedback that improves the draft assessment tool, including how the assessment instruments:
- meet the rules of evidence
- address the principles of assessment
- meet the unit requirements
- instructions to student and assessor can be improved
- questions and tasks wording can be improved
- spelling and grammar can be improved.
Submission requirements
- Quality assurance document completed by you for another student’s assessment tool.
Note: You will submit the Quality assurance document completed on your assessment tool by another student in Task 5.
Task 5: Review trial feedback
You will now use the Quality Assurance feedback of your assessment tool, completed by another student in Task 4, to complete an assessment review. Use the Template_AssessmentReview in the Cl_Assess_AE_SR1 folder to complete this task. You will be assessed on your ability to:
- interpret the feedback provided
- document changes you intend to make based on the feedback
- detailed responses in the Template_AssessmentReview.
Submission requirements
The following documents:
- Assessment review document completed by you.
- Quality assurance document completed on your assessment tool by another student (in Task 4).
Task 6: Make modifications
Modify the assessment tool based on the feedback provided from the trial. You will be assessed on your ability to:
- improve and amended your draft assessment tool to version one
- accurately amend mapping document
- meet the unit requirements
- use version control to save modified assessment instruments
Once you have submitted your modified assessment tool your assessor will review and provide feedback, additional changes may be required to successfully complete this event.

Note: Your assessor may request that you make the amendments to your draft assessment tool in a different colour text and save as V1, submitting your improvements on one lot of assessment instruments, not two.

Note: You will submit the Quality assurance document completed on your assessment tool by another student in Task 5.
