Advocacy Campaign

For this assignment you will create an advocacy campaign based on an environmental issue. You can choose the environmental issue you would like to advocate and choose the audience you are trying to persuade. It would be wise to choose the same issue that you worked on for your midterm project that way you already have some background research and information about the topic. If you decide to choose a different topic make sure you get topic approval from me.

The final assignment is to create 1.) a plan of action and 2.) one message document for an environmental campaign. Your options include designing a environmental advocacy campaign, an early warning campaign based on scientific evidence, an environmental risk or warning campaign, digital media campaign, climate justice campaign or other type of environmental advocacy campaign.

1. Plan of Action

You need to create a plan of action following the guidelines in Chapter 9 of your textbook. Your plan of action is basically the preparation work that you do to make sure that your message and goals are effective and appropriate. It also identifies the target audience for your message.

Your plan of action needs to address the following;

Type of campaign, purpose, type of change sought, definition of your goals, objectives, and strategies, audiences, identify stake holders, mobilization or informational strategies, strategies to influence key decision makers, and messages.

  • Your strategy needs to be based on actual evidence that you collect. You need to identify your audience and collect some data that identifies the needs, opinions and demographics of your audience. This will also help you identify culturally appropriate message designs.

The explanation of your plan of action should be 2-3 pages. Include your sources cited in bibliographic form (APA or MLA). Use a minimum of 5 current sources to support your plan of action decisions and message documents. These sources should be different than the sources you used for your midterm assignment.

2. Message Document

You need to create one or more documents that are a part of your advocacy campaign. A message document is how you get your message out to the particular audience that you are trying to persuade.

  • Your message document can be a poster, brochure, FAQ sheet, commercial, website, Facebook page, etc. (Etc. means that if you have an idea that is not listed here check with me to see if it is appropriate for this assignment.)

You will upload your plan of action and message document into the appropriate dropbox; and upload both into the appropriate discussion box. The appropriate discussion box will be open the week the assignment is due.

The last week of class, for your final discussion, you will view and comment on your classmates’ assignments.

This assignment is worth 65 points (16% of your final grade).

Grading for the assignment is based on the following;

  1. Uploading all parts of your assignment into the appropriate discussion and dropbox in D2L by the assigned due date.
  2. Providing quality information about your topic.
  3. Using information that is appropriate and accurate.
  4. Having a message document that is well organized, easy to understand and appropriate for you identified audience.
  5. Having a well designed plan of action that aligns with the proposed needs and audiences.
  6. Following all of the directions for the assignment.

If you are uploading a video of your presentation it works best if you upload an MP4 file and use Firefox when uploading your video. If you are a MAC user you may have problems with your video interfacing with D2L. For MAC users I would suggest converting your files using the VLC media player/converter (free download). You can also upload a link if you prefer using an external service such as YouTube or Vimeo.
