Part 2: Animal Enrichment & Enclosure Evaluation Report (40% of total grade) 2000 words equivalent
Aims
Your evaluation report builds on your enrichment proposal in Part 1 and will report on the same species. You should use some of the relevant feedback from Part 1 when completing this report.
In this report you will describe in more detail the purposes and importance of enrichment for captive animals (such as those in zoos) and provide some additional information about your chosen species in the wild. You will also describe in more detail your enrichment ideas for your species such as the placement of your enrichments within the animal’s enclosure, as well as evaluating the enclosure from multiple perspectives. Further details of what should be included in your report can be found below in the instructions section.
By completing this assessment, you will be able to:
- CO2: Identify how behaviour is linked to survival and evolution and the interconnection between genes, environment and behaviour.
- CO3: Apply the principles of learning theory to improve welfare and well-being in real-world environments.
- CO4: Examine the ethical issues related to research and applications of learning theory to humans and other species.
Criteria
CAPTIVE ANIMALS AND ENRICHMENTS:
Summarises the purposes and importance of enrichment for captive animals (such as those in zoos).
SPECIES IN THE WILD:
Critically analyses multiple sources of information to describe chosen species in the wild.
ENRICHMENT PLACEMENT:
Describes the animal enclosure for the chosen species and identifies the placement of the enrichments within the animal’s enclosure.
ENRICHMENT DESCRIPTION:
Describes the animal enrichments for the chosen species and justifies these choices considering the existing animal enclosure and Health and Safety factors.
ENCLOSURE EVALUATION:
Evaluates an animal enclosure from multiple perspectives; animal, keeper and visitor.
WRITTEN EXPRESSION AND STRUCTURE:
The written expression in the response of is of high quality (free from spelling, grammar and language errors), and is organised and structured in a logical fashion.
REFERENCING:
Correctly formats references using the APA 7th edition conventions.
Instructions
The steps below outline what is required for this assessment. Use the template provided to write your answers. Please Note: Students are expected to act on feedback in Part 1 where appropriate to ensure Part 2 can be successfully completed. For example, where inappropriate enrichments are proposed in Part 1, students will be expected to make changes and reflect on these changes in Part 2.

b. Delete question text before submission
2. Download a copy of the Horizon Zoo enclosure map for your chosen species.
a. Using this map, consider the placement of your proposed enrichment ideas. Mark these clearly in the map and include in your final report.
