Essential Assignment Resources

Below is the case study that you must refer to throughout your assignment. The case study is fictional, including the names of people and places.

Essential Assignment Resources – Case Study 1: Ella, Michael and Prestige University

Ella grew up in a council flat in Branwick (a fictional working-class city) and was placed in foster care at 12 years old. She was academically gifted, excelling in school. She aspired to attend Prestige University to study Engineering. Ella’s school and sixth-form college did not have experience supporting students with high aspirations; she had to figure out ways herself. Whilst at College, she attended a university fair and discovered a programme she was eligible for, thus making her dream of attending Prestige University a reality.

Michael grew up in Roendale (a fictional upper-class city); his father worked as a CEO of a major international company and his mother worked as a lawyer for a major firm. Michael also was academically gifted and had access to private tutoring. He also aspired to attend Prestige University to study Engineering. Michael attended a world-famous private school and sixth-form college, connected to Prestige University. His parents attended Prestige University and had remaining network connections there. However, Michael and his family consistently had to deal with issues over their race; Michael was the only Black child in his class and faced many micro-aggressions whilst growing up, which at times made him feel unwelcome and like an outsider.

Prestige University has high entry requirements. Interview coaching, and application support from private tutors is common for students to excel in their applications. Michael had this support; Ella did not. Although Ella did not have the same support nor the network Michael had, they were both successfully admitted to Prestige University. Ella secured a financial bursary to support her studies due to her care leaver status. However, she was struggling to adapt to her new environment. Even though she was academically gifted, she was now with other students who were from a higher social class than she was. There was also the issue of her being the only female in a predominantly male engineering class making her feel out of place. Ella felt isolated. She had always been independent but wanted university to be a place where she would make friends with people who shared similar experiences and interests.

Meanwhile, Michael thrived at Prestige University. He joined a society for Black British students studying at his university and felt a sense of community. He sometimes felt out of place amongst the students in his engineering class, as this was a predominantly white cohort, but found solace in university-wide societies and groups. During their time at university, Michael’s access to resources and networks strengthened at Prestige University whereas Ella was quickly becoming more isolated.

Both graduated their course with Ella achieving a 2:2 and Michael a First-Class Honours Degree. Ella is currently seeking work whilst Michael gained employment whilst in his final year at a major international company because the CEO was a family friend.
