ASSESSMENT TASK 3: CASE STUDY

ASSESSMENT TASK 3: CASE STUDY

  1. Choice of Topic

The topic should be a common professional clinical practice to which you can apply

the content covered in Modules 5 and 6. Your choice should be influenced by the following considerations:

  • Your interest in the proposed practice
  • Lack of availability of evidence on which this practice is based.

Please note that if you are not a practising clinician and would be more comfortable using a specific topic from your area of expertise, e.g. education or management, you may apply to the lecturer to customise your topic to suit your needs. Before you do so, however, it is a good idea to investigate whether there is a lack of evidence in the specific topic that you are considering.

  1. Components of the Case Study

It is a good idea to give the case study a title that relates to the topic.

The case study should have an introduction, a body and a conclusion, which should flow seamlessly.

  • is a good idea at this point to construct an outline or skeleton of the case study, for your own use only.
  • the body of the case study, you should:
  • Identify a common professional clinical practice that lacks a rigorous evidence base. You should try to find a specific practice that could be understood by the average practitioner. For example, “Handwashing in the gerontology unit” is a specific practice that is not esoteric. Whereas, “Use of leeches in microsurgery’ would be rather esoteric and besides it is not a nursing practice.
  • Briefly summarise the existing evidence, if any, and indicate where the gap is. Please note that the evidence itself plays a background role; the process is the star of the case study.
  • Outline how you would search for further evidence to support this practice. You could identify any sources of evidence.
  1. Referencing

For this case study, you should aim for at least 10 high quality, current (ideally published within the last 10 years) citations, from professional sources. These can be books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and professional websites. Nursing, medical or psychology organisation websites are acceptable. Avoid blogs and lay websites. It is desirable to have a balance of sources from books, journal articles and websites.

Referencing for all assessments in HEA503 is as per CDU APA 7th style, available at the following URL: http://libguides.cdu.edu.au/cdureferencing/apa

Put the reference list at the end; it will not be counted in the word count.

Make sure that you start the reference list on a new page and that it is formatted in double line space, as per APA requirements. It is a good idea to cross-check that all citations in the paper have a corresponding entry in the reference list, and vice-versa.

  1. Formatting

The following formatting guidelines apply to this assessment task:

  • Font- Calibri or Arial 12 point.
  • Spacing- 1.5 or double space to enable feedback on Learnline.
  • Alignment – Left align text (exceptions: The title and “References” heading should be centred).
  • Margins: Use standard margins of 3cm on both sides.
  • Header or footer – with name, student number and page number.
  1. Word Count

Please adhere to the requirement for 2500 words, +/- 10% (excluding references). You can check the Word Count in the Review panel for Word, in the right hand side of the Proofing subsection. Remember that conciseness is a virtue. Markers may stop marking at the maximum word count.
