Essay topics
Write a research essay on any ONE of the following topics:
– “The legal regulatory framework for corporate governance in Australia fosters
corporate social responsibility.” Consider arguments for and against this statement.
– Compare and contrast key features of the regulatory framework for corporate
governance in Australia, with key features of the regulatory framework in another
country that you are interested in. Identify similarities and differences.
– Describe aspects of the legal regulatory framework in Australia relevant to setting
directors’ remuneration and evaluate the extent to which these aspects encourage
long-term company performance.
Criteria for assessment
In marking the written assignment, the following criteria will be considered:
Writing and research skills
• Written communication skills: use of clear, effective language, appropriate writing
style, and attention to sentence construction, paragraphing, spelling, punctuation and
grammar.
• In-depth research: comprehensively refers to relevant legal (legislation and case law)
and non-legal sources (academic literature such as journal articles, and industry
guidelines); provides appropriate authority for statements in compliance with the
Harvard system
• Structure: key ideas identified in introduction, body of essay addresses issues raised
by the topic in a logical coherent and structured way, with accurate and concise
conclusion responding directly to topic.
Legal Concepts and Analysis
• Understanding of the subject matter: identification of concepts and issues raised by
the topic; accurate description of relevant aspects of legal regulatory framework.
• Critical analysis and evaluation: insightful critical evaluation of existing principles of
law and their practical impact on corporate relations; examines wider economic
and/or financial and/or organisational issues in the context of the legal framework.
