Construction Project Management (CMP) Assessment 2

Introduction

Produce a professional method statement showing how the selected element will be constructed, including temporary works, sequencing and H&S considerations.

(NOTE: The element selected should have sufficient scope and must be agreed with the tutors by week 4) Consider:

  • Choose ONE element with adequate scope

(confirm with tutors if unsure). E.g. foundations & slab, portal frame erection & roof, external cladding.

  • Include: scope, sequence of operations, plant & labour, temporary works quality controls, key interfaces (services, slab) etc.
  • Reference relevant Health & Safety legislation and welfare requirements.
  • Provide sketches/annotated drawings.

Format

Students shall work as a team to produce a Microsoft Word PEP. All submissions should be in Arial, font size 12 and the lines spacing should be 1.5.

Report Structure

The report should include:

  1. Cover Sheet – including module title, submission date, and student names and ID numbers.
  2. Contents Page – a detailed table of contents.
  3. Executive Summary – maximum one page (note: this is not an introduction).
  4. Introduction – outlining the purpose, objectives, and scope of the report.
  5. Main Body – presenting the completed project work, structured around the elements listed above, and providing clear evidence of the team’s outputs.
  6. Conclusions and Recommendations – including lessons learned and a reflection on what was achieved as a group.
  7. References – correctly formatted in APA 7th style, with in-text citations throughout the report.
  8. Appendices – supporting materials that are too detailed or lengthy for inclusion in the main text.

Construction Management (K3): Understand the project management cycle including the planning, budgeting, project funding and payment processes so as to lead to effective project delivery.

Construction Technology (K4): Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the construction process and of the materials and technology that comprise best practice. Safe Systems of Work (K5): Understand obligations for Health, Safety and Welfare issues on site, how to identify potential hazards and manage the risks. Site Management (K6): Apply knowledge of the construction process to the examination and selection of procurement processes.  Evaluate different leadership styles in relation to particular projects.

Planning and Organising Work (S1): Be able to set and review objectives, identify resources and their limitations and plan activities and work methods to ensure project completion on time.

Health, Safety and Welfare (S2): Be able to identify and manage risks of health, safety and welfare in line with legislation, hazards and safe systems of work. Manage Quality (S3): Be able to identify the standards required by clients and other stakeholders and implement effective procedures for managing, recording and improving quality.

Make Effective Decisions (S6): Be able to investigate problems, causes and effects and determine solutions. Manage Information (S7): Be able to identify, obtain and process information required to manage projects. Lead Commercial Strategy (S8):  Be able to manage risk and plan for its mitigation to minimise its impact.

Develop People and Teams(S9): Be able to manage and appraise team members and specialist contractors, build teams, advise on development and resolve conflicts to ensure effective teamwork.

Demonstrate Innovation (S10): Be able to identify areas for improvement, and implement innovative solutions. Site Management (S11): Be able to effectively manage and supervise specialist contractors and operatives during the construction phase.
