Task: Create a “How to” guide to secure a given wireless connection for a SOHO user Details: There are numerous wireless infrastructure devices (access points, ADSL gateways etc) being used by home users and by small offices. These groups have neither the technical expertise nor the financial means to make these devices secure. The evidence suggests that there are many open access points, or poorly secured / configured devices out there. The Police have received reports of people with massive internet bills through having their connection leached. There are also other consequences (identify theft, financial) of having an insecure connection. Quite often they are reliant on the instructions that come with the device (RTFM) or worse yet, “the relative” O.O. Most people just simply are not aware of the risk that these devices pose to their security. Given that a University is not just about learning (yes we actually do stuff other than teaching!) we (you) are going to help the community by creating a “how to guide” which explains: 1) The problems with wireless networks and how they can make your private information vulnerable 2) An explanation of what security measures are available and finally, 3) A security guide written for a specific type of wireless device that allows for configuration of a secure wireless connection depending on the model that you have been assigned
