Emergency preparedness must involve communities as they are the ones who understand their situation (Perry, Lindell, & Tierney, 2001). The research will help to seal gaps in crisis management. In-depth research will expose the areas that need improvement in preparedness, response, and sustainability. The United States must look beyond the Western world in research on disaster preparedness. The inability to improve risk communication protocols has made improvements in disaster management to stagnate. In a disaster management exercise, all individuals in a community must be assisted, and no one should be denied service either they are an undocumented immigrant or a minority (Perry, Lindell, & Tierney, 2001). Therefore, understanding communities and their needs further help increase efficiency during disaster response activities, even though it is highly unlikely that inequality will reduce the different preparedness resources given to a community. The chapter has demonstrated that literature research needs to increase the depth of issues covered. The experts have not figured out everything to do with sustainable methods and practices that provide long term solutions to hazards. More funds need to be set aside for infrastructure development to prevent disasters rather than responding. As the chapter suggests, more research must be carried out in the third world as more perspective will be obtained.
