Inmates who are vulnerable due to factors such as age, mental health, or the nature of their crime often face significant risks within the general prison population. Discuss alternative ways to protect these inmates without resorting to isolation in protective custody, which can have detrimental effects on their mental health and well-being. What programs, housing arrangements, or support services could be implemented to provide safety while allowing vulnerable inmates to maintain some level of normalcy and social interaction? Evaluate the pros and cons of your proposed solutions, considering the challenges of balancing security with the humane treatment of all inmates. Be sure to include examples from the textbook in your answer.

With your readings in mind, do you think schools are relatively safe? In reference to a previous course information, do you take a maximalist or minimalist position? Watch the video link. Does the video make you feel better or worse about potential school violence? What suggestions do you have for reducing school violence? Some schools have moved to banning kids from carrying their phones, with a faction of parents arguing their kids need phones through the day for safety reasons. Do you agree? In addition to school shootings, there have been notable mass murders on college campuses over the last decade or so. Should we impose the same security measures we are using in public schools at colleges and universities? Do you feel like if a potential mass murderer was on our campus grounds that students would be relatively safe? If not, would more money help?
