Thematic Background:
Keep an eye out for how Salinger’s really sensitive people, very mindful, aware, whatever, are so easily and often profoundly impacted by life, its ups and downs, its ‘hurts’, ‘bad’ people’, war, etc.  A few stories go beyond presenting just the problem, but a way to deal with what happens to them, through the usual, spiritual insight, love, etc.

With regard to James Joyce’s stories, they are well understood as being about the paralysis, decaying and death of Joyce’s Dublin (Ireland), as Joyce claims. The stories together paint a culture-wide picture personal, social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual paralysis brought on by ignorance, alcoholism, false romance, fearfulness, small-mindedness, repression of women, undue influence by the Church and by the Anglo-Irish in a predominantly Catholic country, etc.

Please read all of The Dubliners.  Speaking overall, these are variations on a theme.  Brilliant, young, 20 something James Joyce, decides his country at the time is going nowhere, paralyzed, decaying, dying, dead.  Lots of reasons–alcoholism, the Church’s domination of the country, Britain’s domination, and resulting small mindedness, pettiness, fear, false romanticism, broken families, illusions, patriarchy of Irish men over Irish women, etc.  Paralysis of the body, emotions, intellect, sociology-economic conditions, spirituality.  Ah, these bright young critical kids.

Most students find him difficult at first, unusual, hard to follow, boring.  That’s because he only presents the results, he shows rather than tells, you have to figure it out.

Also, at this point in his literary career, he is a literary naturalist–details, details, facts, facts–from his approach comes truth, data is truth!  Hmm.  And all these facts and details about a world of Dublin so long ago.  At first, students say who cares?   Hopefully, they get used to his style and see that he has written a powerful collective expose of his country and culture, one that helped Ireland rebel against England and gain at least most of their freedom.  Okay?

The aim is to strengthen your understanding of the short story genre, its elements and history and to gain a good knowledge of each book author’s philosophy and stylistics, to interpret the contract stories well and to write these interpretations in paper of acceptable academic prose.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Proceeding in study, by evaluating each story for meaning and style, comparing and contrasting stories and striving to develop a general sense of the genre. Become familiar with the elements of the short story and analyze each reading in terms of these elements. Write about the short story, your topic derived from key concerns of your study.

Secondly, Analyze these works within the political, historical and social contexts of their emergence

Thirdly, Demonstrate the capacity to construct logically rigorous arguments; similarly demonstrate the capacity to write clear and correct prose at an appropriate level.

Evaluation will be in terms of how well you analyze the stories for meaning. Compare and contrast them. Develop a sense of the range of genre. Analyze in terms of story elements and writes on selected stories in a clear, correct, detailed and cogent English prose.

Make sure you create a good thesis to go with your paper. Be detailed about your reading showing within your paper that you carefully read the entire book. No outside sources. Just the book as a source.
