Learning outcomes assessed:

All Learning outcomes are assessed within this assessment.

Specifics:

  • The first part of the assessment requires you to analyse how the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum has evolved and compare its structure with another curriculum of your choice. This means that you are focusing on England’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and one other curriculum (and this should be any one out of those that have been discussed on this module).
  • In the second part of the assessment, the focus is on only the EYFS where you are required to discuss the use of assessment and the role of observation considering ethical issues.
  • In the third part of the assessment, you will need to focus on the EYFS and the other early childhood curriculum that you chose in part one. Focus on inclusion issues in both curricula that may affect the assessment process

LO1:

The EYFS and one other early childhood curriculum need to be compared with one another. How did they evolve/develop? What factors have impacted on the development of these curricula? These could be government policies or legislation which provide the lens through which we come to view what these curricula for young children should be. Are there theoretical or philosophical underpinnings to these curricula? What are they and how do they influence these curricula? How do these curricula work in practice? Can you make links between the theoretical or philosophical underpinnings and the ways children learn and participate in these curricula? Sometimes practice conflicts with theory, which is another key way to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

LO2:

In this part of your assessment, you need to reflect upon observation and assessment in the context of the EYFS. Why do we need to observe young children and why is it important for their learning and development? What observation methods are available in EYFS settings? What aspects should be covered in the observation of children?

What are the assessment types that are available in the EYFS? At what points are children assessed under the EYFS and what for?

What are the ethical protocols that need to be considered before observing? Why are they important?

LO3:

This learning outcome will be achieved as you demonstrate your academic skills in carrying out your assessment.

LO4:

What do we mean by inclusion and why does it matter? How do the curricula reflect the individuality of every child and the diversity of their backgrounds?

Some ideas to close: Aim for 1000 words in each part. You may find that you need to write more or less words in a particular part. That is fine. Make sure that you link these three parts together into ONE document. The ideas from one part need to link to the next part. Round up your essay with a brief overview of what you have covered in your essay. Make sure you write in the third person.
