Fair Trade and Kantian ethics

Order Description

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Refer to the Desjardins Ch. 2 reading to answer the following:

  1. How does Kantian ethics differ from utilitarianism? What is a ‘categorical imperative’? What are Kant’s three formulations of the categorical imperative?
  2. What is the difference between wants and interests, and how does this relate to rights?
  3. Why is autonomy important for Kant’s version of ethics?
  4. Identify a time that you have taken a moral stand based on principle (as opposed to being concerned about outcomes).

Refer to the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand website to answer the following:

  1. What is Fair Trade? How does this differ from ‘free trade’ and what problems of globalisation does it seek to overcome? What is importance of fair trade labelling and how is it conducted?

Refer to the Hira and Ferrie reading to answer the following:

  1. What are the competing conceptions of fair trade? What implications do these differing views have for the implementation of fair trade?
  2. What do Hira and Ferrie (2006) consider are the four concerns for commodities production? To what extent can fair trade address these concerns? Why is setting a minimum purchase price controversial?
  3. Should Macquarie University change it’s position on selling only Fair Trade coffee?

DEBATE TOPIC

  1. Fair Trade isn’t actually fair.

PICTORIAL SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS WEEK

  1. Submit a one-page picture (either as a separate file or embedded in your word file) which encapsulates the main points you learned from the previous week. This may contain text but must contain pictures.

Please note that the previous week topic was:

Should we sweat about sweatshops? Labour outsourcing and utilitarian ethics. Look at attached files called ‘Fair Labor Association’ and ‘Nes case’

 RESEARCH TOPIC QUESTION

  1. Select one of your possible research topics and discuss how it might be analysed from a Kantian perspective. Be sure to consider the intentions of the key decision-makers, any impact on autonomy and the three formulations of the Categorical Imperative (though note that not all of them may be relevant). You can use any source as you like

JOURNAL QUESTION

  1. A key component of willpower is exercise. A recent report in the British Journal of Health Science (see below) suggests that we should aim to be engaged in some sort of moderate activity (i.e. anything except sitting or lying down) for at least two hours per day.

For this week,

  1. a) Choose one activity that you will do that will increase your activity level for the week; and
  2. b) For each day note how much moderate activity you do.

Kindly use this reference where I not have it :
