FINAL PAPER INSTRUCTION AND EXPECTATION ( 40 POINTS= 40 % of TOTAL GRADE)
Topic: Your paper will provide an answer to the question: What was McCarthyism?
Within the framework of this broad heading, you will write about a more specific issue relating to McCarthyism (we will be discussing a number of them in class; you can also choose your own). You will use the book The Age of McCarthyism, both the secondary source and the primary sources, as your material.
Format: Your final paper will end up at a length of about 2,500-3,000 words and must be 10 pages minimum. Your paper will be turned in on Canvas as a Word document. You will use a standard font, double-spaced, size 12. When referencing The Age of McCarthyism, both the introduction and the primary sources, you will summarize, paraphrase, quote, and document your sources according to the Chicago Manual of Style, as explained in Rampolla.
References to methods: Your paper will represent events relating to McCarthyism according to the methods we explored in The Landscape of History. You need to make at least three explicit references to different historical methods in your paper. You should make sure to include a reference to the place in The Landscape of History where Gaddis discusses this method. Some of the methods from The Landscape of History are:
–Manipulating time and space (selectivity, simultaneity, scale)
–Deducting historical processes from surviving structures
–Fitting interpretations and evidence
–Taking into account the interdependency of variables
–Discovering a small, unpredictable change that had large consequences
–Identifying a fractal pattern in the story
–Finding a point of no return/phase transition/window of opportunity in the story
–Engaging in counterfactual thinking
–Mapping out the past in a way that avoids oppression
Use of primary sources: The Age of McCarthyism features a selection of 47 documents/surviving structures. You need to choose at least eight of those primary sources and discuss/quote/cite them in sufficient detail so that they can serve as evidence for your thesis statement. When quoting primary sources, you need to edit the quotes, using the methods discussed in Rampolla.
Organization: Your paper should feature an introduction, including a thesis statement, according to the guidelines provided in Rampolla. You should organize the main body of the paper and your conclusion according to Rampolla as well.
Language: Your paper should express the necessary respect for your topic and the appropriate attitude toward your imagined reader, as explained in Rampolla. You are expected to thoroughly proofread your paper (Rampolla provides guidelines for proofreading).
Grading rubric: Your essay will be graded according to the following criteria:
Organization: Does your paper have a clear organization into introduction-main body-conclusion? Is your thesis statement clear? 4 POINTS
Methods: Does your paper employ the necessary number of historical methods? Does your paper employ those methods effectively? 6 POINTS
Focus: Does your paper answer the question you set out to answer and provide evidence for your thesis statement? Does your paper stay on point? 10 POINTS
Evidence: Does your paper make sufficient use of primary sources? Does your essay make effective use of the sources consulted (in other words, does the evidence support a claim you make, or does the essay mainly use quotes to fill pages)? Did you edit the quotations effectively? 10 POINTS
Presentation: Does it avoid confusing grammar and other problems of presentation? Did you format the paper and references according to the Chicago Manual of Style? 10 POINTS
