Should the contracts of college coaches include financial incentives and disincentives related to the academic performance and off-campus conduct of student-athletes? Professor Linda Greene’s analysis of the contracts of head football coaches revealed a trend in which a coach’s responsibility for student-athlete academic performance was explicitly articulated in contractual provisions. In contrast, fewer coaches’ contracts included provisions penalizing coaches for student-athlete misbehavior. According to Professor Greene, “The…trend of contracts without explicit coach responsibility for athlete misconduct seems counterintuitive.” Linda S.
