For example, if your problem is the recidivism / reoffending rate, you come up with the following solutions:

a. Increasing professionals to help in developing talents and skills in prison.

Could you instead focus on one of these solutions, or maybe two of them, and elaborate in greater depth? It would be OK to give a 1-2 page overview of each, but then state that you are going to focus on a specific are.

Then I’d like to see you did much detail into that area. For example, if you decided to focus on Increasing Professionals to Help in Developing Talents and Skills in Prison, go into more detail on what professionals. Back it up with more research on why this is a good idea. Then spend significant effort on how to implement this strategy. You cover some of these things already, you’d just need to go into more depth.

If you follow this so far, in the implementation area you’d cover the “how to implement” and the strategies you’d follow. Think back to the classes we had on Project management. Who would be part of the discussion, how do you get support, what is the timeline, etc.

Then continue to apply the different course topics we used in class. Some may not apply and some may overlap, but address things like Budget (you do some of that already), Communication (who and how would you communicate the change), managing change, leadership / management principles (you cover some of this, but why is this better than the current strategy), HR / labor issues (do you need union support, does it affect other jobs), etc.

Overall, this is a very good start. You just need a smaller focus on solutions, as four will be a lot of work, and then more explanation of the solution.

For next month, you would do all the things I explain above and revise your paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect yet, but should at least be a draft:

In this assignment you will identify:

1. Areas affected by your research problem (this should include topics from your courses such as Communication, Budgets, Human Resources, Employee Wellness, etc.).

2. A summary of how you believe these areas are affected and will be part of the solution.

3. A list of resources you believe you will need to use to complete you research. You will likely also want to identify how you think you will use the source. Example:

21st Century Policing Report – I anticipate that I will use this source to identify how proper police community relations will be used to help resolve …..

Police Chief Magazine Volume 24, Issue 6, “How Police Wellness Programs Reduce Usage of Sick Leave,” Alan Johnson, J.D. (May, 2021). Since my research is based around the problem of sick leave usage in the Fond du Lac PD, I will use this source to identify ways in which the agency can improve officer wellness.

This list of sources is not meant to be all encompassing, as you may find more resources later, but is meant to show that you have identified sources related to your problem and have a good start on your research problem and the areas affected by the problem.

You will have need to at least started your research to identify the sources you will use, however, I don’t expect your research to be completed.
