2. Module aims and objectives
In Fashion Styling you will develop an understanding of the role of styling in different areas of fashion such
as; advertising, film, catwalk, and editorial. You will study styling as a visual embellishment of
contemporary fashion.
You will develop your aesthetic sensibilities in relation to styling and you will learn to work creatively,
developing ideas and narrative, from concept through to finished work. You will engage in group work and
will learn to communicate your ideas verbally and through visuals. You will explore the cultural significance
of styling and examine audiences and contemporary styling outcomes. You will experience first-hand the
role of the stylist and will also learn to create directional fashion image and other styling outcomes.
3. Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module the students will be able to:

5. Learning and teaching methods
The learning and teaching strategy for this module is designed to ensure that the learning outcomes set
out above will be achieved. You will learn about fashion styling and the theoretical contexts within which
they sit through tutor-led presentations, and creative studio work. This will involve examination of
contemporary images and other fashion media, and their associated purposes and meanings. You will
spend time learning through demonstrations and exercises as you learn the technical as well as the
creative skills and a range of media.
Research into materials such as film, music, web, and magazines, and creative development, will be
tutor-directed but carried out in independent study as well in creative studio work, and will enable you
to develop a very strong appreciation of the ‘cutting edge’ in fashion. During the term you will work in
groups and on individual outcomes. However, the individual outcomes will necessitate organising others
to work with. You will engage in self- and peer-reflection and you will analyse your strengths and
weaknesses and reflect on how you interact and perform in group work.
You will be given formative feedback throughout the module and summative feedback concludes every
module.

6. Assessment and relative weightings
You will be assessed on development work during the term, in studio work and independent study,
through researching, documenting, recording, and developing ideas in an annotated sketchbook. You will
also document and reflect upon your group and individual work on the module in your sketchbook. You
will prepare for and take part in styling projects and you will present the best of your finished work in a
portfolio.
Sketchbook and Portfolio (100%)
You will be assessed on evidence that you have engaged effectively and independently in the creative
process of researching, generating ideas and narrative, and developing concepts through to finished
output. You will evidence having applied theory to practice in working in a team and individually to
create visual work that demonstrates effective application of methods and technologies. Your portfolio
will cover a range of work relevant to directional fashion and the styling.

Assignment Brief: Where is Fashion NOW and where is it going?
Discovering the Stylist you would like to be – or think you are.
In Fashion Styling you will be creating a portfolio of original work, consisting of a series of photo
shoots styled to respond to different projects briefs, and supporting documentation of your
creative process within a sketchbook, containing all of your research, idea development and
evaluation used to inform your final project outcomes.
You will work in the photo studio as well as on locations of your choice to explore styling for
different applications.
Whilst studying this specialist area in fashion, you will develop an understanding of styling in
different areas of fashion such as advertising, catwalk and editorial. You will study styling as a
visual language of contemporary fashion, develop your own personal aesthetic sensibilities in
relation to communicating fashion image, and learn to work creatively, developing ideas from
concept through to finished work.
You will engage in group work and will learn to communicate your ideas verbally and through
image. You will explore the cultural significance of styling and photography and examine audiences
and media channels.

Overview for Assignment:
You are asked to create an A3 sketchbook in which you observe, document and analyse what is
happening in contemporary fashion.
Present your research, and document all your original creative idea development to inform the
direction for your styling and photo-shoots in class and during independent study.
Alongside the research you should analyse the relevance of each image and develop ideas how you
could use these references to style your own shoots.
Your A3 sketchbook should be a record of contemporary style and research as seen through your
eyes throughout this term (based on museum / market / street / club, etc visits). Try to include
observational drawings and sketches to communicate your idea development.
It is vital to research as much fashion material as possible – magazines, newspapers, fashion books
available in the University Library and Archives and any material you may come across during the
term or indeed have prior knowledge of. Getting acquainted with a variety of stylists’ work will
help you to understand the panoply of fashion imagery currently available and will help you to
develop your own practice and project outcomes.
Advice for completing your sketchbook:
The images chosen must be of good quality, well researched and sourced from primary and
secondary sources and should act as a sourcebook of ideas and thoughts. They should be reflective
of your personal style. The presentation of your sketchbook, its contents and the choice and
quality of images is very important.
Your sketchbook should be started at the beginning of the module and you should document your
process until the final presentation in week 12.
You are asked to communicate your styling style through your selected images – highlighting
reasons as well as inspirations or thoughts to explain your choice of image and influences.
You should state why you admire the work of other stylists? What makes a stylist’s work
memorable? What do you dislike about some styled images?
All images and sources must be referenced.
Document what you do in class and during your Independent Study, including research, work in
progress, prop making, etc.
Your sketchbook should show CONTEMPORARY styling and document your journey from research
to finalised photo-shoots.
Places to go:
– Magma Bookstore in 29 Shorts Gardens for cutting-edge magazines.
– Camden Market, a great place for sourcing garments / accessories / props.
– 2nd Hand Clothing market on Portobello Rd (under Westway-Flyover) on Saturdays
– Brick Lane and Spitalfield Market on Sundays
These markets are rich in material for sketchbooks (make sketches and take photos). Good places
to watch people! Go to Clubs and look at Time Out magazines for latest listings. Read Styling Blogs.
Look at catwalk shows by creators such as Mc Queen, Galliano and Ralph Lauren.
In terms of current and legendary stylists, look at Nicola Formichetti, Katie Grand, Edward Enninful,
Grace Coddington, Daphne Guinness, Charlie Altuna, William Baker, Katie England, Simon Foxton
just to mention a few. You will find more names in current magazines when you got to Magma on
Earlham Street.
Tasks:
1. To begin the thinking process select 3 styled fashion images that you are enthralled by and
3 that you dismiss during your Independent study, subsequently explaining the reason to your
student group and tutor through an informal presentation in class. This exercise will begin the
process of deciphering images and their codes.
2. Research magazines and a stylist who you admire.
3. For every exercise set in class make a mood board – develop ideas for each shoot based on
research and communicate these in your sketchbook.
4. Create TEN pages of image with TWO pages focused on each of the following:
COLOUR – How colour (or monochrome) affects visual perception. The role of colour in shape.
How does colour affect the character of garments?
LINE – The silhouette, the identity of a look. What is your understanding of the way line performs?
How does it affect the wearer and the onlooker? Messages sent out by the outline of the garment:
serious, authoritative, dangerous, sleek, chic…
TEXTURE & FABRIC – Fabric gives a definite feel and mental identity to garments. Address also
seasonal, age, sex, and cost issues. Luxury, irony, serviceability.
HAIR AND MAKE-UP – How does hair and make-up define the character of the model? How does it
complement the Styling and also the location?
MODEL TYPES – From Glamour to Geek to Gender fluid. What types of models can you find – and
where? Explore both conventional and informal model choices found in the multitude of
publications and advertising.
5. Use your sketchbook as a learning journal and allocate every week a page in your
sketchbook for self-evaluation. What did you enjoy? What did not work? How can you prepare
yourself better if you were to do the shoot again?
6. Prepare well for the 2 assignments in your sketchbook: communicate your ideas, gather
broad Research, make running lists, research magazines in which you would see your shoot, find
reference images for model poses, hair- and makeup ideas, location etc.
During the term you will do 6 photo shoots with different subjects: 4 class exercises that may be
done in groups and 2 assignments that must be done individually. All photos from the 2
assignments must be put into a final portfolio (total 6 images) and you should select at least
further 4 images from class exercises to create your digital portfolio for submission.
Assignment 1
The aim of this project is to create an editorial of 2 looks – a Fashion shoot – reflecting a personal
fashion style. These might be still life, male or female images but all must contain a fashion
element. The images may be taken by the student him / herself or by a friend or colleague as long
as that person is credited as the photographer. This project must be done individually.
One cannot stress enough the importance of familiarity of fashion poses, real fashion stories and
carefully planned ideas to make your work look like well styled pictures – not casually taken ones.
The Brief: ‘Future Fashion’
Science Fiction as a genre has produced many exciting and evocative visuals in recent generations.
Fashion designers often look to other-worldly themes in order to produce visuals or themes in
their work. Think of wearable technology, technological fabrics and artisan – will craft become
more important in the future?
Designers that you may wish to look at that often include some sort of sci-fi aesthetic in their work
are: Gareth Pugh, Iris van Herpen, Hussein Chalayan, Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Aitor Throup…
for this project you have to research future fashion or futuristic styling and create a photo story
inspired by an existing editorial. Prepare outfits / props / customized clothing for the shoot in
Week 5.
You are asked to produce a fashion story for a chosen editorial: ID magazine, Pop, V or other
magazines of your choice. This can focus on Menswear/ Womenswear, or an Accessories /
Jewellery story.
Using material from your research and sketchbook work as inspiration, you will produce a series of
2 images (each image a new look and no repeated items!) that tell your fashion story. This must
reflect the image of your chosen editorial and it’s readership.
You cannot work in groups!
Submission Requirements
Thorough research on topic in sketchbook; good evaluation of how your chosen concept relates to
contemporary styling. Shoot of 2 photos.
Assignment 2 – The FINAL PROJECT
The aim of this project is to create an editorial of 4 looks – a Fashion shoot – reflecting a personal
fashion style. These might be still life, male or female images but all must contain a fashion
element. The images may be taken by the student him- / herself or by a friend or colleague as long
as that person is credited as the photographer. This project must be done individually.
One cannot stress enough the importance of familiarity of fashion poses, real fashion stories and
carefully planned ideas to make your work look like well styled pictures – not casually taken ones.
The Brief: ‘Style Tribe’ A Self-Portrait
The task is not to create literal self-portraits but to find a topic that represents you and create a
fashion story about it. This could be about a personal philosophy or credo, a description of your
alter ego or by defining yourself as member of a particular style tribe. This project is about your
personal aesthetics.
The shoot has to consist of at least 4 cohesive looks, telling your story. When and where is your
story set? Think of the right location and props. Who is your reader / audience? In which magazine
will this story be published? Be mindful and realistic about your choice of publication and available
merchandise. Are you using text as well? If so, should it be integrated in the actual photos or
added in postproduction?
It should be treated as a multi-facetted self-portrait. Do not forget to also reference in your
sketchbook hair and makeup ideas and model poses and to make a running list in preparation for
your shoot.
Research related subjects and their representation in images and create a photo story. Be
imaginative and prepare outfits / props / customized clothing for a shoot in Weeks 10 and 11.

• Actual Sketchbook with all research, work from classes, conceptual development and photo
shoots.
• PDF that contains photos of all double-pages from your sketchbook
• Digital Portfolio and PDF of best images
Sketchbook and digital portfolio to be submitted by 12:00h in PS201.
Blackboard PDF File submissions to be uploaded by 15:00h.
You are required to submit your digital Portfolio on a memory stick in full resolution. I will copy
your portfolio to my desktop and you can keep your memory stick but please don’t ask to open
Google Drive or similar to view the images from there. This takes too long.
Put your images in a folder with your name and the course code, and title each image in that folder
with your name, the shoot name and a number. Number all your images in the right order starting
from 01. This will make sure that they open as you plan it. Please do not create a
PowerPoint presentation or similar.
The PDF that contains the chosen images from your portfolio should be in a lower resolution.
NOTES
• Please ensure that your name, and the course name and module code, are clearly and neatly
marked on all pieces of work submitted for assessment.
• Please note that all work is assessed using the Regent’s University London Common
Assessment Scale.
Attendance Policy

From time to time alterations may be made to the scheme of work to take account of students’ progress
and unforeseen events or opportunities. If so, you will be informed in advance where possible, but check
Blackboard and your RUL Email regularly. The scheme of work is intended only as an outline of topics to
be covered and is not a definitive list of what will be included in individual sessions and undertaken during
your Independent Study.
Guided Independent Study
Guided independent study will require the student undertake preparation for scheduled sessions, followup work to extend the individuals learning and development, reading or research activities or practice to
develop their skills and confidence. In all cases, students will be expected to demonstrate self-initiative as
well as manage and be responsible for their own learning.
Please refer to the ‘Independent Study’ column on the Scheme of Work above for details about the
Independent Study activities that you will need to complete each week. If you have any questions about
your Independent Study activities, then please contact your Module Lead.
About Your Assessment:
Where possible, feedback and indicative grades will be made available via Blackboard within two working
(term time) weeks of submission. All modules are subject to sample internal verification and cannot be
confirmed until after the meeting of the Board of Examiners, held twice a year.
If your submission is late by up to three working days after due date, it will be accepted, but capped at 40%
as a late submission. Course work submissions received later than three working days will be classed as a
non-submission, and marked as 0%. For further information on late submission regulations, please refer to
section E9.12 of the University’s Academic Regulations 2018/19.
Please allow plenty of time to upload submissions, and await a confirmation message as appropriate.
Should you have any issues uploading whatsoever, please take a screengrab of the error message, emailing
blackboard support and the module lead as soon as possible, ahead of the deadline as specified.
Should there be any extenuating circumstances regarding your submission, please contact the Student Hub
as soon as possible BEFORE the stated deadline. Please note, all claims are subject to approval upon the
production of appropriate evidence.
If you are in any difficulty whatsoever leading up to submission, please contact your personal tutor and/or
Module Lead immediately and well in advance of the deadline, where you will be advised appropriately.
On receiving and reading your grades and feedback, if there is anything you do not understand, please
contact your assessing tutor in the first instance who will clarify anything you do not understand.
Assessment Grading and Feedback
The assessment of student work seeks to measure the students learning and performance over a specified
part of your course in relation to the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Tasks as stated in this Module
Handbook.
The statements in the MODULE ASSESSMENT RUBRICS on the following pages outline the level of
performance and achievement for each grade banding which are mapped to each of the Learning
Outcomes for this module. The level of performance that you have achieved for each Learning Outcome will
be clearly indicated on your assessment feedback form.
In addition, you will receive written assessment feedback that will identify three strengths and three areas
for further improvement. This aims to help you understand what you are good at and what areas you
should focus upon going forward.
Students are encouraged to critically reflect upon their learning and performance and use their assessment
feedback and awarded grade bandings to inform their ongoing development.
