Huntington Disease PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY Research Paper Guidelines It is imperative that more than 50% of your paper is concentrating on the brain and the neurochemistry of your topic. The paper needs to be 5-6 pages, excluding the cover page and the reference page. It has to be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12 font size. There should be NO bullets throughout the paper. Pictures are allowed as an appendix at the end of the paper. Pictures and images should not be included in the body of your work. You need a minimum of four references, excluding our textbook. Two of the references have to be from scientific journal articles. There are several ways to access scientific journals. One resource is http://www.eric.ed.gov (Links to an external site.). You could also check with your school’s library for other journal resources. Please ask your librarian for assistance. For your third and fourth resources, you could use books, magazines, and credible internet sites. Wikipedia is not a creditable website. Take a look at the website below for instructions on how to cite. Please keep the headings below to help you organize your thoughts and paper. Your last page should be a list of your resources. Topics If you choose a neuropsychological disorder for your topic, the suggested areas to cover are: Introduction A brief history of the disorder (i.e., who discovered and coined the name; when; etc.) and who it afflicts (i.e., gender, age, ethnicity, etc.) Etiology What are the causes of this disorder? You will find for many disorders, the exact cause is unknown. However, there are theories. Discuss the major theories? Causes could be genetic, neurochemical, environmental, etc. Symptoms Symptoms of the disorder (for a psychological disorder, you should be using DSM-IV-TR. You will find this book at your local library in the resource section.) Effect on CNS (This is the most important and longest part of your paper) What happens with the person’s central nervous system? Make sure to mention the brain parts and the neurotransmitters associated with the disorder. Are there structural and/or functional abnormalities? Treatment Treatment (how is the disorder treated? And/or interventions?). If you are discussing psychotropic medication, make sure to mention how the drug affects brain functioning.
