Establishing a Research Model Through Junk FoodChoose a junk food that you would like to compare such as potato chips, crackers, chocolate. On a shopping trip, buy 3 of a kind that are different brands. For example, choose all plain potato chips but purchase Lays, Wise, and Cape Cod. Choose chocolate chip cookies but buy Chips ahoy, Nabisco, and a store brand. For chocolate, buy either all dark chocolate or all milk chocolate but different brands.
The food that you have bought is your dependent variable. You want to assess the quality of the food item and the likelihood that a person might buy it.
Your assessment requires you to determine what factors shape or influence the likelihood that someone would purchase your chosen junk food. These are your independent variables. You will need to think about what characteristics affects which product a person might choose to purchase.
Develop 4 different characteristics (independent variables), but you must be precise and clear so that different groups of people will understand how to respond to your questions. For example, those who choose potato or corn chips will want to assess the level of crunchiness in each chip. Would everyone know the concept of crunchiness? If yes, then you can measure this concept. Also, recognize that I used the term, “level” of crunchiness. You want some variation beyond yes, no, like, don’t like. So, you would measure not crunchy enough to too crunchy with a “just right” somewhere in the possible responses too.
Feel free to ask others in your household to join you for this taste test and tally their responses too. Answer the following questions based on your food research. Upload assignment 1 in Canvas.Provide a picture of your 3 types of junk food. Remember they should all be the same, but different brands.
Provide your 5 different characteristics (independent variables) for measuring the quality of the food item as well as your responses. If you are the only one present to taste test, then you will only have your responses to tally.
Explore how the characteristics you chose to measure food quality and their relationship to purchasing a particular junk food item might differ across different demographic groups (for example, kids vs. parents, race, social class etc.). Write down your thoughts.
