An Experiment to determine the resistance values of resistors wired in Series and Parallel

Task 1

In this Task you are required to devise an experiment to test the validity of both Ohms law and the accuracy of the resistors used in the experiment. To this end in Weeks13 to 15 on Moodle is a copy of an Experiment Portfolio you may use an experiment from the Portfolio or from any other source.

All work must be in your own words. Do not use cut and paste for the written text as this will affect your mark. You may use pictures or drawings where you may use cut and paste.

Marks will be awarded for presentation, grammar, spelling, clarity of descriptions and showing good communication skills..

The table below shows the voltage and current values obtained from two experiments using two resistors wired in series and parallel.

The apparatus used was;

A voltmeter, an ammeter, a dc power supply, two resistors 39 ohms and 47 ohms with a 5% tolerance, a breadboard, and cables.

  1. From the information given in Tables 1 and 2 calculate the individual resistances’ for both series and parallel circuits
  2. From these figures calculate the mean value of the resistances
  3. Using Ohms law and other formulae calculate the theoretical values of the resistances in both circuits..
  4. Explain any differences.
  5. Comment on the accuracy of the experiment and the components used.
