Considerations for when boys have conflicts.
a. Observe a teacher who intervenes when one or more boys is experiencing a conflict. Which of the guidance intervention guidelines for boys listed in the chapter did the teacher use? Which of the guidelines did the teacher not use? In guidance terms (teaching, not punishing), assess the outcome of the intervention. Compare your findings to ideas from the chapter.
b. Interview a teacher you think has gone beyond the boy behavior stereotypes and works well with boys in the classroom. Ask about steps the teacher takes to ensure that the curriculum is developmentally appropriate for all children in the class, including active boys. Ask about steps the teacher takes when intervening with boys to ensure that the outcome “teaches rather than punishes.” Compare the teacher’s responses to ideas from the chapter.
