Much of our course has focused on military, political, and intellectual leaders of Europe like Socrates, Alexander the Great, or Augustus. Write an essay in which you consider moments when we have been able to hear voices from average people; consider the significance of those voices and (if described in our text) the sources we use to try to understand those perspectives.
Core themes of our class are chance and choice. At one points have we been able to see the ways that individuals’ choices or the role of chance shape history? Write an essay in which you organize your examples around an argumentative thesis and discuss examples from at least two different chapters. Note: your examples should relate to each other and illustrate one other point or insight about the periods we have studied; an essay that merely describes three unconnected examples of choice or chance will receive a low grade.
Chance: “the occurrence and development of events in the absence of any obvious design.”
Choice: “an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities.”
It has been said that the Romans managed to create a world that the Greeks had only dreamed about. To what extent do you think this is true? Write an argumentative essay in which you make a case for or against this perspective based on evidence from the text. For this essay, you’ll need to make sure you define your terms and explain what you mean by “Romans” and “Greeks.”
You may also write on a different topic as long as it touches on the economic, political, and social cultures and institutions in this period and it covers more than two chapters, but please let me know in advance so I can approve your topic.
