Ryerson has leased a new space at 44 Gerard street just north of Ryerson’s theatre.Construction is going on to build a 3 story facility for a new teaching program that includes classrooms, labs, offices and meeting rooms. A typical, to scale, floor plan is shown below for one of the 3 identical floors
The design objectives include:
a. Network connectivity to the main campus for Internet access to be done through 4 strands of Single Mode Fibre
b. The network operation in the building has to be independent on the main campus, except for Internet access
c. Each room, irrespective of its purpose, should have adequate number of network drops
d. Adequate WiFi coverage and capacity should be available throughout the building
e. IT-Security is a paramount
f. Cost is a major factor but should not compromise any of the above design objectives You were tasked to:
1. Select the locations for the demarcation point, MDF, IDF/s
2. Select the locations for network drops and their cable specifications
3. Select the locations for Wireless Access Points and their specifications
4. Select the locations for any network switches and their specifications
5. Decide on the needed server/s for the network operation inside the building
6. Add other networked equipments that you see required for the building’s operation
7. Decide on the needed computers, laptops, printers, phones,..etc
8. Design proper network segmentation
9. Design the IP address assignment scheme for the network
As a group of 3-4 students you need to:
A. Design the building’s network to meet the design objectives
B. Update the floor plan for one of the floors using Visio
C. Explain the IT security measures provided in your design
D. Provide a Bill of Material (BoM) for the equipment that to be purchased for your network and its peripherals (servers, computers, laptops, printers, phones…etc)
E. Explain the rationale for each selection you made in your design
