OVERVIEW:

The main assignment for this course is the development and written submission of a production and operations management plan.

Project Description

As a group of 5 or 6 “managers”, you will design a template for the production and operations management of a consumer or B2B product or service that MUST be approved by the instructor. (Important Note: If it is a service, it must involve the use of products in delivering the service.)

The project will follow the course schedule.

Your team will describe, in detail, what your product is, who uses it, how it is used, and where and when it is used. Following the template, you will describe, as completely as possible, all of the components required. It is expected that you will work on your project on a weekly basis based on what we cover in class. There are two parts (submissions) to the project.

Research Component

You will be required to conduct research on your product. Please use as much primary and secondary data as possible. The greater the amount of information and data you submit, the better your grade. You are being evaluated on your creativity and ingenuity as well as your expertise. Do NOT limit your sources to the textbook. However, remember that you must rationalize whatever decisions your team makes.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

  1. Read the chapters in the text. The text does a good job of reviewing the key theoretical concepts along the way to provide you with tools to guide you in developing your plan.
  2. Ask questions. If you are having difficulty with a concept or with a certain aspect of the project, please ask questions
  3. Work with your team members and attend all team meetings. Do your work in a timely way and don’t wait until the last minute

Project Outline and Grading Scheme

Please read the course syllabus to see when each section of the project is due. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Each report should be considered a detailed report to the senior management team that requires approval.

  • Justification of the product or service viability and its method of production should be the key objectives of the final report.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:

It is important to understand that this is really one overall paper being done in two pieces, not two papers. Some of the decisions you make in the first submission will have implications for what you decide in the second submission. So, make sure that you KEEP A COPY of everything that you hand in, and refer back to your earlier paper when writing your later paper. I need to keep your earlier paper so that I can make sure you have done everything consistently throughout the entire project, so keep a copy of all your work that you submit and any charts, tables, data files, appendices, etc. that you are going to need again later on in the project.

SUBMISSION #1 (total marks, 110)         (15% of final grade)

Product Analysis (10 marks)

Explain in detail what your product or service idea is, including its features, benefits, unique selling point, what makes it different and stand out from similar products on the market. (2 marks for each subsection in this section)

Consumer Analysis (10 marks)

Describe in detail the typical target audience or audiences, using segmentation variables. Do a short survey to test your idea and build a profile of the typical customer who would be interested in your product. (5 marks each part.)

Competitive Analysis (10 marks)

What products/services in the marketplace are in competition with yours? What companies manufacture these products? Who do you see as the most important competition to be concerned about, and why? What is the unique selling point of your competition’s products? (2 marks each question)

SWOT Analysis (10 marks)

Do a SWOT analysis of your organization. (Spend MORE time on Opportunities and Threats than on Strengths and Weaknesses because you are analyzing your company relative to the marketplace). (2 marks each for S and W, 3 each for O and T)

Product Design Sources of Information (10 marks)

Compile a list of articles talking about necessary components, sources of supply, and how the product or service is to be created. These articles are to be kept in an appendix at the back of the main paper.

Manufacturing (or Services) Design (10 marks)

Explain, using diagrams where appropriate, how the product will be created or the service will be put together for giving value to a customer. (Higher marks will be given to those teams that gives the clearest explanations, so that a reader who had no idea about the product or service would be able to understand the steps in its creation and how it generates value, using the terms from the chapter in the explanation of the creation or manufacturing process).

Operation Strategy (10 marks)

Explain what your company’s overall choice of operational strategy is from the three main choices and why, and explain how your product strategy supports this choice. (3 marks for choice, 3 marks for why, 4 marks for support.)

Definition of Quality (10 marks)

What overall definition of quality is your management team using in your approach to this product or service, and why? Use the text to help get you started. (5 marks for choice of definition of quality and 5 marks for reasons why)

How to Measure Quality (10 marks)

What is your “quality standard” for this product or service? How are you going to measure to ensure that the standards you plan to meet are being met consistently? (5 marks for naming your quality standard, and 5 marks for explaining how you are going to measure to ensure you are hitting your standard.)

Inspection Criteria (10 marks)

Explain the inspection process that you would implement for your product or service. When would you inspect the product, where would you inspect the product? Are there aspects of your product or service where the technique is “foolproof” and inspection is not necessary? Do employees do their own inspection, at the “source”? Use the text information to help start you. (Answers will vary depending on the product or service, so higher marks will go to the teams that are the most clear and most detailed explaining their criteria.)

Total Quality Management TQM (10 marks)

Explain what your total quality management approach would be as an organization. What steps would you implement and how would you make sure TQM was being followed by all members of the company? (5 marks for explaining WHAT TQM procedures you would actually use in creating your product/service, and 5 marks for explaining how you would promote buy-in throughout the company. Please note, it is not good enough to just name the TQM steps. You MUST think about what steps would make sense for your particular product or service and create a TQM strategy. This answer involves a bit of creativity.)
