Prompt
For this discussion, you will analyze a case study in public health from the textbook, Master of Public Health Competencies: A Case Study Approach, edited by Santella. Please review the following case study from this text:
Chapter 8: “Adapting an Evidence-Based, Sexual Risk Reduction Intervention to Be More Inclusive of Trans and Cis Girls.”
This case study was based on real public health initiatives. Therefore, your engagement in this discussion will help you hone workforce-related skills for public health practice.
For your initial/main post, please complete to the following:
Part 1—The Impact of Bias (~50 words): Public health professionals must be aware of their own implicit biases. Visit the Project Implicit website to explore your potential biases. In your main discussion post, reflect upon your personal potential biases. How could these biases impact your public health practice or research?
Part 2—Health Literacy (~100 words): Consider a specific population you are interested in working with (or work with already). What are the culturally appropriate communication practices of (1) persons who share that health condition or identity and (2) health professionals who provide services to that population? Would you (or do you) use identity-first or people-first language? Explain.
Part 3—Evidence-Based Public Health Practices (~150 words): In this case study, a review of the literature informed the adaptation of an evidence-based, sexual risk reduction intervention to be more inclusive of youth who identify as sexual or gender minorities. Which other quantitative and/or qualitative data collection methods might a public health professional use to better adapt this curriculum for this subpopulation or other populations of interest? (Hint: Consider the formative research conducted to inform the original development of HIP Teens.) How might a public health professional evaluate the adaptation of this intervention?
In all posts, please make certain to include in-text citations throughout and a reference list.
Collaborate with your colleagues on this case study within your reply posts. Please further the discussion by offering suggestions, elaborating on points made, presenting additional evidence/information, asking open-ended questions, etc
