Transformational Leadership Analysis
Transformational leadership is a style in which leaders motivate team members to make changes according to the organization’s values and goals. In this document, we analyze a case in which a leader follows the transformational leadership style. As a result, we can see positive results in patient care, nursing practices, and work environment. The most important components of transformational leadership are communication and effective partnership, which help create a sense of unity and common ambition among team members(Kim & Cruz, 2022).
If this leadership approach is adopted then it helps to motivate the staff members to show results beyond expectations and they are given the right to make decisions within their roles. This creates a culture of innovation and helps to create a positive attitude that is ultimately necessary for the organization to achieve its objectives(A, 2024).
The Scenario
I was a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and our unit consisted of 20 beds in the hospital and was dedicated to providing care to premature infants and their families. Our hospital maintained our commitment to distinction and kindness in every aspect of patient care which shows our core values of dedication, partnership, and innovation.
During our daily meetings which were conducted by our unit manager, we used to share information, ask questions, and suggest improvements that can help us before our shifts started. And in those meetings, I understood the power of transformational leadership. Our manager’s role was important in this regard as not only did the manager create a positive work environment for everyone where we felt valued but also helped us to think creatively.
The greatest person who helped with my development as a professional individual was my manager as she wanted us to be able to make the best decisions and gave us feedback that let us improve ourselves more professionally. She put into practice the best scientific evidence and took the lead in improving the quality. She exhibited clearly by experiencing her commitment to the staff’s and patient’s welfare. Thus, she set a good example for others to emulate. She has always been enthusiastic and consistently motivates us to carry our heads high and professionally work alongside fellow staff.

Under the manager’s guidance, I learned the principles of transformational leadership which helped me to contribute towards the well-being of my patients and their families. Her mentorship helped me to understand my potential and I was able to set goals for myself. I feel supported by my team members and was given multiple opportunities that helped me to lead the team, participate in collaborations among multiple teams, and train the juniors. With her support and encouragement, I felt confident in understanding the challenges of the nursing field and motivated to make a positive contribution to the lives of our patients and their families.
Transformational Behaviors
Transformational leadership plays an important role in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as it helps to guide, inspire, and provide positive feedback to nurses so that they can give the best care to the patients(Gebreheat et al., 2023). Leaders in this scenario are not just managers but they are motivators and role models who promote passion and commitment in all members of their team.
A premature infant is fighting for life and is surrounded by a team of dedicated and professional nurses who are doing their best to provide the best possible care. In such scenarios, the influence of transformational leadership becomes intense. Leaders in the NICU like our unit manager are best in creating confidence and motivation among team members. They allow nurses to take part in the decisions and motivate them to understand their role which creates a sense of accountability and authorization(Ystaas et al., 2023).
Let’s take an example of a challenging case in which the probabilities were against us. In this case, our manager not just only provided us with guidance but also inspired us to show our potential and behave accordingly to obtain positive outcomes (Sihvola et al., 2022). Her continued support and reassurance helped me to increase my confidence and helped us to explore the hurdles with determination.

Moreover, the transformational leaders in the NICU mainly focus on the professional development of their team members. They understand the potential and unique strength of each nurse and provide personalized feedback and coaching which helps them to grow(Wang, 2022). For example, our manager figured out the areas in which I could enhance my skills and make my participation in the preceptorship program compulsory. This helped me to become a better mentor for my colleagues and contribute towards my team’s success more positively.
Transformational leadership in the NICU is not just about managing the tasks but about creating an environment of collaboration, inspiring to have a common vision, and promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement(Wang, 2022). With the help of their positive behavior and dedicated support, the transformational leaders in the NICU help their team tackle the challenges and provide exceptional care to the patients and their families (A, 2024).
Transformational Leadership, Communication, and Collaboration in Nursing
Effective leadership is an important factor in the nursing field to achieve success in providing better care to patients. Transformational leadership whose main focus is on the inspiration of team members, plays an important role in creating an environment where communication and collaboration are necessary.
The main principle of transformational leadership is to recognize the importance of communication. Leaders who follow this approach and promote communication can create an environment for employees where they can easily share their thoughts and ideas (Cummings & Wong, n.d.).. In this nursing field, this aspect is more important as the exchange of information is essential to understanding the patient’s needs and achieving mutual goals and objectives.
Effective communication in the nursing field is not just about conveying information but about motivating employees so that they can show their skills in practice. Transformational leaders know the importance of words and they use them to make employees comfortable, promote engagement, and encourage team members to work together (Ystaas et al., 2023). These leaders can help nurses to take ownership of their work by creating an environment where they are free to share their concerns and proper action is taken about those concerns as it will help to achieve success.

Other than promoting communication, transformational leadership also focuses on collaboration and teamwork. Nurses usually have to work in teams that are related to multiple disciplines and for this effective teamwork is most important to give better care to the patients. The main role of transformational leaders is to support their employees in their efforts so that they can work together and provide them with necessary resources which helps to increase collaboration among team members(Cummings & Wong, n.d.).
In the nursing field, collaboration is not just about working together on tasks that are related to patient care but it’s about identifying the unique strengths and skills of each member so that common goals can be achieved. Transformational leaders can recognize multiple perspectives and motivate the employees to accept each other points of view. If the culture of collaboration is promoted it can help to create unity among the team members which results in better patient outcomes and satisfaction (Sihvola et al., 2022).
The main factors that are most important to achieve success in the nursing practice are transformational leadership, collaboration, and communication and these three factors are connected. If collaboration is promoted among the team members, then transformational leadership can create an environment where nurses feel motivated and they can provide the best quality care to the patients. The healthcare sector is changing with time and transformational leadership is playing a positive role by promoting excellence in the nursing career(Wang, 2022).
Conclusion
Transformational leadership mainly focuses on inspiring team members as it plays an important role in promoting a culture of communication and collaboration among team members in the nursing field. Transformational leaders create an environment where everyone can share their ideas and views by paying attention to employees’ concerns as this helps to provide the best care to the patients. Effective communication with inspiration and motivation can help nurses perform better in their practice and work together to achieve common goals and objectives. Transformational leaders help to support collaboration among team members and use their strengths and skills to achieve the best patient outcomes.
