Be consistent with referencing. NEVER hand in the first draft of an essay. Sufficient time should be allowed for editing the Essay or even rewriting. To write an excellent Essay and maximise essay marks ensure that:
The essay includes a clear introduction and a clear conclusion.
Your material is focused and directly addresses the essay question.
Your argument is explicitly stated in the introduction and systematically developed and substantiated throughout the discussion. Repeating the essay question or repeating an assertion does not constitute the articulation of an argument.
Your paper is not a set of notes or quotations but a coherent justification of a position
Points and sections are always clearly linked.
Grammar, punctuation and sentence construction are accurate and the writing is elegant.
Referencing is comprehensive and accurate. While there are a number of recognized referencing systems, this faculty uses the Harvard system, which we recommend you use.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ESSAYS
You must use a standard system of referencing where page numbers are provided (in full and with date) for direct quotations and specific references. If an essay is incorrectly or insufficiently referenced according to standard styles, it will be penalised with a reduced mark. A referencing guide will be posted at L@G.
Ensure your essay is well edited and well-presented:
* use 1½ -2 line spacing
* font size should be read comfortably, Arial -11 point, Times Roman -12 point
* ensure pages are numbered
* provide a cover sheet that includes your name, the title of the essay and the word count
* use a consistent and accurate referencing style – preferably the Harvard system with page numbers. If a
reference is taken from a particular page, or pages, then the page number(s) must be included. The in-
text format should include the author surname(s), date of publication, and page number. When words
are taken directly from other sources (books, articles and web sites) and reproduced in an
essay/submission quotation marks must be used if quote is in-text. If the quote is indented then no
quotation marks are required
* include a reference list with entries in alphabetical order by author surname
* written assignments must be within 10% of the specified word length
In this course we want to allow you as much as possible the opportunity to engage directly with the ideas of the selected major thinkers. You are therefore encouraged to focus on the chosen primary text for these essays so there is no requirement for a minimum number of sources. If you do use secondary sources make sure they are of academic quality, clearly state that it is someone else’s interpretation and differentiate your own position from theirs explicitly.
