2. Assessment of the role of leaders and managers relating to emotional intelligence behavior:

The main competencies and abilities of emotional intelligence can be learned and developed.

Relationship management relates to the ability to “connect” with others and build positive relationships. In this context, leaders learn and develop the traits of treating others with sensitivity, kindness, and compassion.

● Soft management or the use of soft skills is vital in critical areas. Soft skills (qualities) such as openness, sensitivity, candor, empathy, compassion, emotional vulnerability, and willingness to accept full responsibility for unpopular decisions are productive management techniques and they contribute to an effective management style.

●They assist managers in making critical decisions and taking hard choices and, in the process, are as useful as “hard” qualities such as charisma, firmness, aggressiveness, and “always being right.”

● Using soft skills can be crucial in the decision-making process and how managers interact with their employees. Managers should be receptive to diverse opinions and suggestions and should not interpret constructive criticisms as insubordination.

● Using soft skills is also crucial in the recruitment, training, and mentoring processes.

• The barriers in cross-cultural workplaces on using emotional intelligence effectively.

Consider the following in enhancing your presentation:

1. Avoiding universal assumptions relating to management, decision-making, employees, and the organization of work.

● Different cultural beliefs and values generate different sets of assumption regarding the nature of work, the workplace, authority, and leadership.

● Cultural differences play a critical role in determining why human resource management policies tend to have varying effects in different countries. 

2. Recognize the importance of communication: Communication is the critical factor in cross-cultural management, inter-personal management, leadership, group interaction and collaboration.

3. Knowledge of communication noise: Identify and assess the cultural variables that could cause communication “noise” or barriers in the communication process. 

These variables include values, language, time, roles, social organization, attitudes, attribution, and context.

4. Context: Communication context affects the meaning and interpretation of the communication process.

There are high and low context cultures:

In high context cultures, such as those in Asia, feelings and thoughts are not expressly expressed. They are implied (or embedded) in the communication process.

Values and Trust: Building trust is dependent on the values of a country and there are wide variations.

In Asian cultures, trust is based (developed) on longstanding personal relationships.

• How EI can be geared to cross-cultural work experiences.

1. Cultural awareness and sensitivity: respect for cultural differences.

Understanding the nature and dimension (variables) of a specific culture and how they affect the business and economic environment.

2. Communication strategies for international business: Understand how culture affects negotiations and decision-making.

● Select an effective communication strategy: direct or indirect communication

● Identify and focus on protypes and avoid stereotypes and ethnocentrism. Be aware of others’ perception of your culture.

● Identify specific ways to bridge cultural gaps and overcome cultural barriers.

● Building relationships and resolving disputes.

• Summarize the issues that Sarah faces and give five (5) tips that will improve her EI skills for better performance in a cross-cultural workplace

Spend considerable time in the early stages of the negotiations assessing the long-term strategic interests and consequences of your decision.

Importance of group cohesiveness:

Recognize the Japanese focus on managing continuity and avoiding uncertainty.

● Japan’s Building-up Inductive Approach: Building relationships: Investing time in the negotiation process.

● Preparation for negotiation and negotiating style:

Recognizing how your negotiating style differ from the Japanese norm.

Recognize that emotional sensitivity is highly valued in Japanese negotiations and decision-making.

Japanese focus on the individual and not a company.

Recognize the importance of non-verbal messages and behavior.

Understand the value of humility and conciliation in Japan.
